MANE MUSE ZENDAYA HAIR BY LARRY SIMS

“I’ve taken fashion risks since I was really young,” says actress, singer, and dancer Zendaya, who has paved her way as also a style maven and it-girl with regular jaw dropping red carpet and fashion week appearances. “I’ve always been into dressing different and doing different things.”

When it comes to talking about Zendaya’s daring red carpet appearances and bold, trend-setting looks, she’s quick to appreciate her stylist and creative director Law Roach. “When I do my hair, it’s usually a collaboration with me and Law,” she says. “He comes up with the idea. It all comes from his brain, [but] sometimes he comes up with an idea and then we all just talk about it, and it turns into something else.”

Though that doesn’t discredit Zendaya’s personal sense of artistry and style, as she’s known for her unique spin and individual approach to beauty. The duo are even coming out with a line of unique and luxury shoes, Daya, this coming spring. So add entrepreneur and designer to Zendaya’s growing list of talents and skills.

If you’ve seen her Replay music video, you know the girl can pull of many diverse looks, as she channels iconic pop stars in the ever changing scenes of the video. “I love people who take risks and do their own thing, [like] Erykah Badu because she is effortlessly amazing, or Janet [Jackson] for sure]. I think we all want to channel our inner Janet.”

And with an idea comes the execution, and hairstylist Larry Sims can deliver. With his background as a dancer, Larry has a unique perspective when it comes to creating and executing the vision of an artist. “I know what it feels like to be on the stage and perform, and how the hair needs to feel and move. I speak the same language as a lot of my clients, whether they are actresses, singers, or performers; our minds work alike.”

So with a lot of planning, and conceptualizing, our Mane Muse shoot was born.

“The theme of the shoot felt like going through different decades of beauty,” Larry explains. “Zendaya is fearless. She’s a creator’s dream. Inspired by Cher, we wanted to create the bone straight, parted down the middle, chic vibe. It could be described as a modern day Janis Joplin. We kind of did a version of this at the AMA’s a few years back when she wore an all-white ensemble, but we haven’t revisited it for quite a few years.”

“We’ve done a lot of red carpets together,” Zendaya reminsisces of her relationship with Larry, “but one of my favorites was that AMA’s. I felt very Bianca Jagger, like Cher with super long hair.”

“But now it still feels new and fresh,” says Larry. “Got2B has a really beautiful flat iron spray called Guardian Angel, which also protects your hair from the heat. You spray it on sections from root to tip and it fights frizz, gets the hair super bone straight, and it looks so smooth. I like to use it with the H2Pro flat iron.”

ZENDAYA AFRO BY LARRY SIMS

The next look “was inspired by shapes and texture. I wanted to do a twist on what an afro looks like…[and Zendaya] is a perfect canvas. She allows you to just go for it and when you think you’ve gone too far, she pushed you to go further. In this business it’s hard to stay inspired. I just feel so lucky to have such a creative muse who trusts my vision. I didn’t use any products except some shine spray and I cut the hair with clippers. For this kind of shape, it needed to be really defined, and I wouldn’t have been able to sculpt it the same way with shears. There’s a symmetry you can create really well to get those perfect straight lines with clippers.”

And then Zendaya channeled Brooke Shields and Diana Ross, with “80’s supermodel inspiration. We used two wigs. I cut into them both a bit to shape, then secured them with pins. I used color spray in Zendaya’s hair to blend them with the wigs. We teased it with the height and just went there! Threw a little wind on it and it was good to go!”MANE MUSE ZENDAYA HAIR BY LARRY SIMS

“This last look was all about Grace Jones. It was an old style, a high top fade. It was an homage to the era Zendaya grew up in. She’s so in tune with what’s new, what’s fashion, but the high top fade is so left from what she’s done before.”

Zendaya Beauty Quote

The fade was unanimously the favorite look from the day and Zendaya was so excited to visit something new, which unsurprisingly is exactly her element. “Trying new things [is when I feel most confident]” she tell us. “I love doing something that people haven’t seen in a certain setting,”. But we could have guessed that from her statement making appearances last week at Paris Fashion Week (did you see that short bob and cornrows?!).

For young girls’ who want to experiment with their look, the teen star says, “go for it! With beauty and fashion, I think everyone should just try to create their own. Don’t try to fit into a mold that doesn’t exist. We each have our own form of beauty, and that’s really special.”

So what’s next on the fashionista’s beauty forecast? “I want to play with color. I haven’t really played with my hair color before, but that would be something fun to try. I say you should never not try something new.”
