MANESPIRATION: Kendall Jenner Goes Blonde for Vogue
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.” This quote from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland always reminds me of Vogue’s Creative Director, Grace Coddington. Every story she brings into the pages of American Vogue is a beautiful battle of fantasy and reality, which we know as fashion.
In the December issue, Grace brings the story of Alice back to Vogue’s pages to support The London Theatre’s new musical for the digital age, wonder.land (wonder-dot-land), shot by photography duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott starring leading lady Kendall Jenner.
When it comes to turning Jenner into a platinum blonde, there’s no better Mane Master for the job than Shay Ashual. Shay is the genius behind all of the most indistinguishable wigs we see. His wig work looks SO real, SO identical to a natural head of hair, it takes a very trained eye to know the difference. I’m sure at first glance, you too thought Kendall underwent a major hair makeover to the lighter side. Ashual’s work always makes us do a double-take — Was that tweedle dee or tweedle dum?
This story of Alice has influenced Vogue for years, from the 2003 Vogue story of Natalia Vodianova shot by Annie Leibovitz, to Tim Walker’s Wonderland, to the 2015 Met Gala theme Through the Looking Glass.
The story of a girl living in a fantasy; a childhood adventure created for adults; is perhaps a story perfectly cut out for Jenner. At the forefront of fashion, Jenner’s career has been a whirlwind down the rabbit hole of success. Growing up as a character on Keeping Up With the Kardashians has been a nearly life-long adventure in reality television, a tangible battle between fantasy and reality. And we can’t help but follow her story closely with wonder of which route she’ll go next. Perhaps Carroll Lewis was right in saying— “we’re all mad here.”
