Whether he’s creating Victoria’s Secret waves or a futuristic editorial look, Bryce Scarlett is a force to be reckoned with. Styling the likes of Kate Upton, Nicola Peltz, Lily Aldridge, Gigi Hadid, and Natalie Portman, Bryce has proven himself as a master of red carpet as well as editorial. It only takes a quick scroll through his Instagram feed to see the amazing versatility as an artist (Cannes anyone?). We had a chance to ask Bryce a few questions about his road to success and the hiccups that happen along the way. Scroll below to see what he had to say.

How did you get your start in the industry?

My mom is a hairstylist. As a child, I used to sit and watch her blow dry hair and be so captivated by the process. That exposure to hair styling mixed with the never ending supply of fashion magazines in the salon kept me fascinated most of my childhood. When I graduated from high school, I knew that hair was something I loved and felt confident doing, but I also wanted to work in fashion. When I learned about the freelance and editorial side of this industry, it became clear that I could have aspects of both. So I went to Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles at 18.

What was your biggest career challenge and how did you overcome it?

Learning to balance my work and personal life. Still working on it and open to suggestions!

Who are some of your role models and why?

I have so many and couldn’t name them all, but a few that are close to my heart are:

Tracey Cunningham: She is one of the hardest working people I know. Her work ethics and heart of gold have inspired me since the day I met her almost 10 years ago. Not to mention her hair color is as good as it gets.

Kate Upton: Kate never takes no for an answer and has taught me that your career path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Franco Gobbi: I was lucky enough to assist Franco for almost 4 years. He always pushes the boundaries. Building things that are so beautiful yet rugged and authentic. He’s truly an artist, and a great guy.

Do you have a signature look or style that you’re known for?

I think I’m a bit young to be “known” for anything yet, I tend to do very feminine hair and try to make everything look lived in and organic. For me it’s all about “the look.” The outfit and the woman wearing it dictate everything I do.

Which hair products or tools are always in your kit?

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?

Have fun, you are overthinking it. And stop tanning:)

What is the best advice you’ve received?

“Say yes to everything.” – Tracey Cunningham

What advice would you give to new stylists?

You’re going to be around a lot of big personalities, give off a calm energy and observe people, let them come to you.

What is the next chapter for you?

I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had so far and can just hope for more of the same.

How would you describe your beauty and hair philosophy?

“No matter what style you are creating, at the base of it the woman should look like she has beautiful healthy hair”
