Alexander Wang’s SS16 NYFW show was not to be missed. With a bold collection inspired by street style, it’s no surprise that fashion trendsetters such as Mary J. Blige, Kylie Jenner, Kanye West and Lady Gaga were found in the audience. His collection boasted bold chain earrings, oversized clothing, crop tops, and modern basics, quoting his inspiration as “rejecting ‘innovation!’ The mundane is inspirational!”

“The point of the show is the individualism in the girls,” says key hairstylist Guido Palau. “Each girl is really being left as they are. Alex very much wanted to emphasize the realness. The girls’ walking on the street off the runway, avoiding a manicured feeling.”

“Alex’s original idea was just to leave the girls’ hair as it was, but he suggested we might cut some bangs on some of the girls,” says Guido, “but then we found out 12 of the girls’ were willing to get their hair cut, so we went with it. I think Alex has the power to encourage the girls’ to do it, and I think girls aren’t as scared [of getting their hair cut] anymore. There was a time when girls’ were afraid to cut their one length hair, but now we see all sorts of looks in shows, which just broadens the idea of beauty.”Guido Palau Haircuts for Alexander Wang NYFW SS16

“We cut a lot of the girls’ hair so they look more like a boy [and to]… give it a little edge. We cut quite a lot of fringes to give the girls’ personality. We are at a time in fashion with quite a lot of different faces and a lot of different types of beauty. We don’t see just one type of beauty anymore…Some of the cuts had to do with layers, thinning out the ends, long bangs, short bangs, surfer cuts, mens cuts, etc.”

“The looks are a lot more masculine and the look was about bringing out the girls’ boyish qualities. Often we are doing a part with the side over the eye, creating nuances that are really beautiful. Everything with the hair is on purpose, but we want it to look like the girls’ have always had that look.”

“I looked at the girls’ natural hair then used Redken Windblown for texture. It gives it that oopmh, guts, sexiness, and texture with a windblown feel. It lifts the roots. It’s a really great product, because it is so people friendly. You can’t really go wrong with it. It’s going to give you more volume, more texture, the more you put in. Some hair products you get nervous with because they have too many oils, or too much hold, but I use this product all the time for a very natural, downtown feeling, which is very Alex Wang. He’s got a cast of characters and amazing girls, so we only really had to emphasize it with the help of scissors.”

“I personally love girls’ when they look boyish. It’s my favorite kind of girl. It’s just so easy. I think it’s something that every girl goes through at some time in their life. A lot of the girls in this show already looked that way anyways, so we just emphasized it more. Masculinity always has a coolness when it’s on a girl. When you over-feminize a girl, she doesn’t look cool, she looks pretty. In this type of show, the girls’ want to have a kind of toughness to them.”

Guido also went on to tell us that because the show as all about masculinity, Alex wanted to through some men onto the catwalk as well. The men were given clipper cuts and nicked the eyebrows for a very “cool, 80’s feel.”
