NEED TO KNOW: 5 Hair Extension Methods and Choosing the Right One For Your Mane

long blonde hair

If you can’t grow 20 inches of hair on your own, extensions can help you look like you did. There are so many different ways to add length and fullness to your hair, as well as several factors to consider when choosing extensions. So, which one is right for your hair? We know it can be confusing, which is why we’re breaking down the five most popular extension methods—from what distinguishes one from another to the pros and cons of each—to make your selection process a cinch.

HALO EXTENSIONS

For the commitment-phone, the halo weft is clip, tape and glue-free! This temporary extension sits on top of the hair and is kept in place by an undetectable wire. The halo comes with one weft that has same amount of hair as a full set of extensions.

  • Application time: 2-5 minutes
  • Maintenance: None
  • Longevity: 9-12 months

CLIP-INS

Clip-in extensions have been around for a while, and still stand to be one of the best temporary methods out there. Clip in as little or as many wefts to customize your desired thickness, and remove them yourself at any time.

  • Application time: 20-30 Minutes
  • Maintenance: None
  • Longevity: 6-12 months

TAPE-INS

Tape extensions are a more permanent solution for long locks, as they are attached to your natural hair with adhesive. Despite their permanence, they’re very gentle on your strands. Each “weft” of hair consists of two, one-inch sections and those are applied onto your real hair.

  • Application time: 1-2 hours
  • Maintenance: 6-8 weeks
  • Longevity: 6-9 months

BRAIDLESS SEW-INS

You’re probably familiar with traditional sew-ins that are usually applied onto cornrows or small braids. The braided sew-in extensions can cause scalp irritation, headaches and even hair loss, so it’s no wonder braids have been cut out of this method. A similar application is used in the braidless technique by sewing large wefts onto your real hair with thread, only without the painful cornrows.

  • Application time: 3-4 hours
  • Maintenance: 6-8 weeks
  • Longevity: 4-6 months

FUSION KERATIN BONDS

These are permanent extensions that are applied strand by strand and covered by the top layer of hair. Attached by melting the keratin bonds onto your real hair, they form a durable bond to lay flat to your head with little to no breakage and easy removal.

  • Application time: 3-4 hours
  • Maintenance: 3-6 weeks
  • Longevity: 3-6 months
