The buzzcut is a surefire way to make a statement–hello, everyone is going for the big chop! If you’re thinking about baring it all, now is definitely the time—the buzz is having a moment. And, you don’t have to look far for inspo–badass babes like Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne are owning their image and proving that women are just as sexy and beautiful without hair. Here’s what you should consider first about the buzz cut before you twin with top celebs.

Buzz cut style tips to consider

It’s important to remember that just because your hair is shaved doesn’t mean you don’t have to take care of it! The buzz cut is surprisingly high-maintenance. You have to keep up with length and routinely shear in order to retain its alluring freshness. To find out what to expect before you buzz, we checked in with celebrity stylist, Joseph Chase of Martinez Samuel Salon, who is responsible for artist Halsey’s stellar strands. “Make no mistake, male or female, this is truly a cut for the bold,” comments Joseph, “so expect to get double takes when stepping out.” GAME ON!

THE NEW CELEB–REALITY

There is an undeniable strength in the buzzcut that is guaranteed to turn heads. The androgynous look is associated with power, liberation and even soldiers, making it THE CUT for achieving a badass je ne sais quois, a lá Kristen Stewart. The buzzcut makes you look like you are about to flip off the paps before jet-setting in a leather jacket—even if you’re coming off the bus with your IG husband in head-to-toe satin. Forget Victoria Secret waves; the buzz cut will really make you feel famous. “From Cara Delevingne, Kristen Stewart, and my personal client, Halsey, the buzz cut seems to be becoming a more popular look,” Joseph affirms. “This cut can be such a freeing experience.

TALK TO THE PROS

Sound appealing? Before you go any further, sit down with your stylist. “I suggest having a consultation to talk about the different levels of buzzing,” he says. “Since a buzz cut is done with clippers, you can use different types of guards for different lengths for shaving.” The devil is in the detail—like any other haircut, how much (or how little) you shear will change your entire look.

PERSONALIZE YOUR PRODUCTS

If you thought you were going to do away with an arsenal of styling products after undergoing the buzzcut, think again! The buzzcut still requires a trusty mix of styling products to keep it looking dope. “Depending on how short one goes with their buzz, determines product use,” Joseph notes. “If the hair on top has more length, one can use a style wax like Osmo Clay Wax to give a hint of texture. For shorter buzz cuts, a smoothing serum such as R+Co’s Tinsel Smoothing Oil can be applied to give strands a more polished look.”

AMP UP YOUR COLOR

This boldness doesn’t have to stop at your cut. To get an even higher intensity style, just add color. “For a gutsier buzz, a platinum, bright, or pastel color would be great with this look,” says Joseph. “I suggest Pulp Riot colors. They are so fun and color is a slow fade. But for those not wanting a permanent color change, use a color spray or chalk that will wash out after one use. This is a great way to liven up your buzz cut.”

DON’T SLACK ON SHEARING

Although this cut will save you time in the mirror, there is still much-needed care and preparation required to achieve an enviable crop. In fact, your stylist is apt to become your best friend when sporting this style. “While this cut requires minimum styling time, it is important to maintain the look by getting a fresh haircut every three to four weeks. So make sure to pre-book with your stylist, this will keep you looking on point.”

PHASE II – PIXIE

“When it is time to grow out a buzz cut, one must be patient,” advises Joseph. “The average hair growth is a half inch per month.” Plan your next style by taking this into account. “Expect a pixie in the near future—well before the mermaid hair,” he says. Again, your trusted hairdresser will be by your side throughout this awesome journey. “Continue to see your stylist as the hair grows, for trims and advice on how to maintain your stylish look,” councils Joseph.
