Despite beach waves being one of the most indemand styles, summer actually isn’t the best time for anyone’s hair. We’re all prone to sweat, frizz, flyaways and so much more when braving the season’s hot temps and humid climates. And for natural-haired girls, extra steps must be taken in order to beat the heat and keep strands safe. We’ve rounded up a variety of protective hairstyles that will keep natural hair safe and healthy all summer long.
Felicia Leatherwood styled Issa Rae’s mane in a unique braid, plus some extensions.
Vernon Francois slicked back Amandla Stenberg’s curls, but made sure to secure her edges up front.
Oscar nominee Ruth Negga ditched her pixie cut for a full head of braids, courtesy of Lacy Redway.
Lacy also added some pearls to accent these Rapunzel-length braids on Tessa Thompson.
Takisha Sturdivant-Drew flipped Leona Lewis’ curls into the much-loved pineapple updo.
The Bold Type‘s Aisha Dee got some cute afro puffs created by Takisha as well.
Gabrielle Union has embraced her natural hair lately, and even experimented with some braids.
Cornrows & Extensions
If you don’t want to braid your entire head, take a cue from India Love. She braided only the top of her hair, above her extensions.
