As part of our series, Hair-apy Sesh, we’re asking the hair industry’s most-trusted mavens to divulge their secrets about what products get lifted from their kit, their idea of the most overrated and underrated hair tricks, plus their favorite high-price-tag and drugstore buys that confidently carry them through their bustling careers.
Ahead: LA-based hairstylist Samantha Annatone @samatonee on how to get and maintain healthy hair plus the salon treatment worth every pretty penny.
One expensive treatment that’s worth every penny is the Brazilian Blowout! It’s customizable, great for all hair types, causes no change to your natural curl pattern, and no line of demarcation with new hair growth. The results are supposed to last 12 weeks, but I feel like it lasts way longer than that so how cool.
DIY Healthy Hair
Incorporating treatment masks into your daily routine is so underrated. Healthy hair is sexy hair. For me, I like to treat the hair as often as possible. The most efficient road to healthy hair starts from within. I really love the OUAI Thinning Hair Supplements. Regularly scheduled hair cuts are also important—once you have a split end it never stops splitting until it’s cut.
My trick for this is to throw a treatment mask on and incorporate it into your everyday look. Click through for examples of how you can style it.
Moisture on Lock
Start with a rat tail comb parting your damp hair, then use a brush (Sheila Stotts Removal Brush, or Wet Brush) to smooth hair back into a bun, securing with any type of elastic or hair tie. Gently grab the hair from the ponytail and twirl it into a bun, top it off with a scrunchie or something fun!
For Added Shine
I feel like the most underrated drugstore product for healthy-looking hair is Bed Head Headrush Shine Spray! It’s perfect for pretty much any hairstyle on myself or clients. I use it all the time on clients, whether it’s to create the chic straight “glass hair”, snatched pony, or even while doing bridal updos I will use it after I curl the entire head to create a healthy, polished but tousled look. I personally like to spray a little on my second day natural curls, to tame any frizz and get that shiny but not crunchy look.
