Dyson has once again turned the whole hair world upside down, this time with the introduction of the Airwrap™ styler. Prepare to see it replacing pretty much all other styling tools, whether backstage, in your stylist’s kit and your bathroom—it’s that revolutionary. As the name suggests, the Airwrap™ was engineered to utilize air to style, and it does so without the use of extreme temperature, creating curls, waves, volume or sleek straight hair. The airflow that comes out of the Airwrap™ is so powerful that it controls the hair, basically forcing your tresses to follow the direction of any of the styler attachments.

Dyson thought of all hair types and textures when designing the styler, which was engineered to mirror aviation principles. In what is known as the “Coanda effect,” an air stream will wrap around a curved surface (like the wing of a plane) due to the extreme difference in pressure. Dyson’s team of aerodynamicists applied the same concept to hair when designing the Airwrap™. The result is impeccable style created through air, without the need for extreme heat—so hair styled but not damaged. #goals.
To say no expense was sparred in creating the Airwrap™ would be an understatement; Dyson spent seven years and 75 million pounds understanding hair science, researching hair damage and different hair types in labs around the world. The Airwrap™’s assemblage is James Bond level precise—it is made with weapons grade equipment and never touched by human hands. “We spent about $350 million developing electric motors,” explains Sir James Dyson on the styler’s body.

Dyson’s research basically confirms what any hair pro can tell you. “If you want to have healthy, shiny hair then don’t overheat it,” says James Dyson, further explaining what happens when hair is exposed to extreme temps. “What happens is the moisture inside the hair overheats, bursts out, and makes craters in the hair follicle. Those craters make it weaker and they also make it look dull,” he says of the hair. “If you overheat it, and you shine a light, it doesn’t reflect.”
There are six attachments that come in the complete Airwrap™ kit. These attachments cover literally all styles. Inside the kit is a pre-styling dryer, which will rough-dry the hair; a soft smoothing brush that adds volume to fine hair; a 1.6 inch Airwrap™ barrel that creates loose curls, and is ideal for those with a coarse texture, and a 1.2 inch Airwrap™ barrel that allows those with fine hair or straight hair to get voluminous curls, or for tighter curls in coarse hair. The kit also comes with a firm smoothing brush, for making curly or frizzy hair straight, and a round volumizing brush to add body and shape in thin or straight hair.

“The Dyson engineers have really paid attention to women’s needs, and what we need to do to really get our hair styled on our own,” notes Brand Ambassador and our Mane Mother, Jen Atkin. “Not only did they revolutionize the hair dryer, but now they’re giving us a tool where we can basically be our own hair stylist and get a number of amazing great looks no matter what your hair type is.”
