If you aren’t yet familiar with how your tresses can benefit from incorporating honey into your hair routine, we’re here to teach. The natural sweetener isn’t just great for sweetening your tea but it can also promote hair growth, cleanse, condition and add shine to your hair when used in hair treatments. Honey contains invaluable vitamins, is an antioxidant and a humectant (which means it retains moisture) so when used as a hair product your locks become moisturized, luscious and shiny.
We all know that with the cold winter months come dry, brittle strands and scalps so there is no better time than now to start incorporating honey hair treatments into your beauty regimen. So whether you are looking to target flaky scalps, deep condition your tresses or add shine, this inexpensive household item can be used by itself or combined with other ingredients to treat your hair. Here, we’ve rounded up seven DIY honey hair treatments to try out when you’re snowed in this winter.
1. For Shiny Hair: Honey and Coconut Oil
For a DIY recipe for shiny, moisturized hair, take 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil, mix together and apply to wet hair and leave on for about twenty minutes. We recommend using a 100% Extra Virgin coconut oil like SheaMoisture’s.
2. To Moisturize Your Scalp: Honey and Shampoo
If you are finding yourself with a dry, itchy scalp this winter adding a tablespoon of honey to your shampoo will help to replenish your scalp of it’s moisture to eliminate dandruff and dry skin. Simply add 1 tablespoon of honey mixed with your dollop of shampoo, massage into your scalp just as you would with shampoo and rinse.
3. To Lighten Your Hair: Honey and Water
As honey contains traces of hydrogen peroxide it can be used to gently lighten your hair as an alternative to bleaching or coloring your hair. For this treatment, stir a tablespoon of honey into 1 cup of water and apply to your hair from roots to end and let sit for 30 – 60 minutes. Repeat this treatment until you’ve reached your desired shade.
4. To Deep Condition: Honey, Olive Oil and Eggs
For a deep conditioning mask that will leave your locks soft, moisturized and shiny: take 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of olive and mix. Add in 1 tablespoon of honey and stir until the mixture is creamy. Apply to wet hair and cover hair with a shower cap and let sit for one hour. Make sure that you thoroughly rinse the treatment out of the hair as your strands will be sticky until the mask is completely out. Follow with shampoo and conditioner.
5. To Repair Dry, Damaged Hair: Honey, Avocado and Olive Oil
If you are a victim of major heat damage, this honey, avocado and olive oil hair mask will not only help to repair your hair but will continue to protect your mane from future heat damage. For this honey hair treatment you will need 1 ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons or olive oil and 2 tablespoons of honey. Using a hand or stand mixer mix the three ingredients until the texture is light and smooth. Apply to wet hair and cover with a shampoo cap and let sit for 30 – 45 minutes. Rinse the treatment out and follow with shampoo and conditioner.
6. For Hair Growth: Honey, Bananas and Olive Oil
As bananas are rich in potassium and antioxidants that promote hair growth, this DIY hair mask will help those suffering from hair loss or simply want longer, luscious locks when used weekly. You will need 2 ripe bananas, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix the ingredients until you reach a smooth consistency. Apply to wet hair, really focusing on massaging into the scalp and let sit for 20 minutes. Thoroughly rinse and follow with shampoo and conditioner.
7. To Balance An Oily Scalp: Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is naturally high in acetic acid and has a pH level that is close to human hair so this quick, in-shower hair mask will help to balance an oily scalp when mixed with honey. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of ACV, bring the container in the shower with you and apply liberally to your scalp and hair after shampooing. Let the treatment sit for five minutes and rinse then condition. Use every time you shampoo until you’ve reached desired results.
