The VMAs is when celebs let loose – whether they choose to unleash their inner siren, show off mermaid locks or slick it all back – the hair looks on the VMAs red carpet are as diverse as the talent sporting them. From a supermodel on-duty ponytail, to a crowd pleasing shag, a larger than life 60s beehive, or OMG rainbow roots, here are our fave looks of the night.
Halsey’s Rainbow Roots
Halsey adds a pop of every color, rocking long dark hair juxtaposed with ah-mazing rainbow roots. “The rainbow part was Halsey’s idea. She loves to stand out and switch things up. I made sure to give her a simpler hairstyle to showcase the part and make sure the rainbow was the star of the show,” says stylist Florido for Dove Hair. To get the look, he sprays Dove Care Between Washes Re-Styling Milk ($4.99) at the roots on dry hair, brushing it through. Next, he smoothes out the hair using a ghd ceramic vented radial brush in size 4 ($40) and a ghd air® hair dryer ($199). Once Halsey’s hair is totally smooth, he creates loose waves, taking 3-inch sections into the ghd platinum+ styler ($249), bending the hair forward and backwards from the roots to ends. He sprays each section with Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray($4.99) to create a foundation for the waves, then brushes the hair out, teasing at the root. “I finished off this style by spraying her hair down the middle to make sure the rainbow part REALLY stood out,” says Florida, who notes he generously sprayed Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99) to lock the part in place, clipping the hair back behind both ears.

To finish, he flatirons and sets the style with Suave Professionals Firm Control Finishing Hairspray for flash-photo worthy shine.

Is that Lizzo or Brigette Bardot? We wouldn’t expect anything less than larger than life hair on this IRL diva. Hairstylist Shelby Swain for Dove Hair, created Lizzo’s Retro Glam Beehive with the past in mind. “We wanted a sultry, glam look for Lizzo tonight. Using legend Brigette Bardot as inspo, we landed on this cheeky-but-chic retro beehive.” To get the look, Shelby shampoos and conditions with Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo ($3.99) and Dove Intensive Repair Conditioner($3.99) “to ensure that the hair was balanced and properly moisturized to receive product and be perfectly placed,” she explains. Next, she spitzes the Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99) throughout and blows the hair out using a ghd round brush and the ghd air dryer. "Heat protectant is so important to use during prep as it preserves the integrity of the hair,” she adds. Shelby then curls the ends using the ghd curve classic curl iron, letting the hair set for 20 minutes before spraying with the Dove Care Between Washes Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($5.99), teasing out the hair to ensure maximum volume. She finishes the style with Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.99) to mold and form the beehive and Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99) to keep it in place.

Bebe’s bleach blonde bun with lived-in roots is pop star gone rocker. Hairstylist Ursula Stephen created the ultra sleek look using products by Dove. “The dress was the ultimate accessory! I love to see Bebe with her hair up so it was a no brainer when I saw the neckline," says Ursula. To start the style, Ursula sprays Dove Care Between Washes Re-Hydrating Mist ($4.99) on Bebe’s clean mane to create texture. Next, she parts the hair into medium-sized sections, taking a one-inch curling iron and creating loose waves throughout. To achieve maximum pieceyness for this style - and therefore, an edge, finger comb the curls once they’ve cooled down. She then sprays Dove Care Between Washes Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo($5.99) all over the hair to add grit. “Volume is everything,” says Urusla. “I brushed her hair up into a messy bun and loosened the hair at the crown to suit the shape of her face.” To solidify the style Ursula generously applies Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99).
