Oat milk is the gift that keeps on giving. Though it’s not the sexiest sounding alterna-milk on the shelves, it wins in the all-around benefits department. Seriously, we’re not sure what oat milk can’t help with. By now you’ve probably heard the wonders oat milk works on skin—and how helpful it can be for those with dairy-sensitive guts—but BOOM, this miracle cure-all is also winning in the hair dept. And it’s a good thing for us, because we’re always on the hunt for the next super ingredient when it comes to our hair, especially if it’s hiding in plain sight on our shelves. We consulted with a top derm and hair expert to dig deep into the world of oat milk and find out all the reasons it needs to be in your routine, like, yesterday.

Oat Milk Hair Health Benefits

“We know that oat milk is a lactose-free, high protein, good for you drink, but, what you might not know, it’s also an excellent treatment for your hair and scalp!” says Chelsea Scott, Haircare Expert and Founder of TRUHAIR. That’s because oat milk is a natural cleanser. “It draws out excess oil on the scalp to restore shine and it’s anti-inflammatory properties help to relieve dandruff and other irritations without using harsh chemicals,” she explains. Not only is oat milk moisturizing, but it also contains our favorite vitamin — vitamin B, which is crucial for healthy hair and scalp. This au natural cocktail of goodness gives oat milk the ability to penetrate the hair, which helps strands retain moisture. “Oatmeal also contain polysaccharides, which makes the hair soft and is rich in omega-6 fatty acids that help repair damaged hair,” adds Chelsea. As if this weren’t enough, oat milk can also improve the hair’s elasticity, which can “prevent damage in the first place,” Chelsea tells us, and also aid in your mane’s growth.

For many of these reasons, Dr. Robb Akridge, Co-Founder of Clarisonicagrees that oat milk is the shiz, but how it affects you largely depends on your route of oat milk based administration. “The dietary fiber (beta-glucan being the most important of that) and minerals present in oats are thought to help avert numerous dangerous conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and even cancer,” he says, noting that studies support these benefits, which is probs the reason you were always told to eat your oatmeal as a kid. “Consumption of oatmeal is thought to be good for your heart. Oat milk exhibits strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal choice for dry, itchy or irritated skin. However, don’t think that by applying it to your skin it will improve heart health. Based on its lipid and water content, oat milk does offer moisturizing properties, removes impurities and helps eliminate dead skin cells,” he adds.
