Even delicate chains have an edge. Maybe it’s because chainmail was originally used as a way to protect soldiers in battle, or perhaps it’s their versatile and generally unisex design—whatever the reason, chains are their own statement. Backstage at Christian Siriano, celebrity stylist and key hair for the show, Justine Marjan, embedded glittering silver chains into the model’s manes, creating the ultimate festival inspo and adding an unexpected twist on evening glam.

Interwoven chains take the hair jewelry trend up a notch, and are an obvious graduation from hair piercings. The chains add “an element of surprise,” explains Justine, on creating an unforgettable NYFW ‘do.

To get the look, Marjan preps the hair with the Treseume Repair and Protect 7, blowdrying it smooth with the ghd Airdryer. She then flatirons the hair from roots to ends using the ghd Platinum Plus Styler. To ensure all the chains are held in place while the models are in full strut mode, Justine creates a “secret braid” through the middle of the ponytail, sectioning it in two. She then attaches the clasps of the chains, concealing them by slicking the hair back.

Next, Justine collects the hair, gathering everything into a low ponytail. To set the style, she wraps the chains around the ponytail elastic, joining it back with the original pony. “When creating a ponytail, make sure the hair is tilted back,” shares Justine. “That way, when they tilt their head forward it’ll be secure,” she explains of her pro-tip.
