At New York Fashion Week some designers made their models’ manes flutter with butterflies, or added an element of surprise to strands via chains, but Phillip Lim chose to forego the frills in favor of fluff. Giving more movement to the pieces in his Autumn/Fall ’19 collections was a textured, fluffy style—a refreshing deviation from the current sleek, glass hair trend. Here at Mane Addicts, we’re longtime fans of texture, whether it’s natural or contrived.
In the case of models with flat or straight hair types, the full-bodied, borderline-frizzy texture was created with just two products. Lead stylist for Aveda Gary Gill started with straight hair, parting it into two sections on either side of the root of the head and nine sections in the back. He then added two pumps of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and a few spray of Aveda Texture Tonic to each section. Each section was then braided, blow dried with the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, and flat ironed to “bake” the style in. After letting the style set for several minutes, braids were removed and brushed through to create a look as fluffy as possible.
The textured hair moved beautifully as models walked down the runway and looked as cool and easy as the designer’s collection, a modern, essential wardrobe that fused elevated utility, elegant sportswear, and youthful tailoring. The contained yet unkempt texture at Phillip Lim not only served as an interesting juxtaposition to the more refined pieces but it was also an eye-opening reminder that there’s a chic way to embrace texture and frizz without looking like one was just electrocuted or hit by humidity. The key to taking pride in your texture? Mousse. Aveda’s Phomollient, for example, makes the most of your texture while adding body and shine.
