When your full-time job involves making drastic hair color transformations happen for the rich and the famous without their hair dying off, we can bet your knowledge of dry hair remedies reaches fiercely far and wide. As is the case with Aura Friedman, Mane University educator and the woman behind Zoe Kravitz’s platinum blonde hue and Salma Hayek’s pinch of pastel peach during Cannes. Ahead, Aura’s tips on the hair-quenching ingredients that make for the perfect DIY dry hair recipes.
I haven’t done this in a long time however when I was in high school my best friend and I used to spend our Saturday is making DIY masks so you’re in luck because I have a lot of good information about that stuff. Ingredients that work great for DIY dry hair recipes include yogurt, avocado, coconut oil, and mayonnaise.
Avocado and coconut oil are great for moisturizing—you really have to purée and mash the avocado well before you put it in your hair. The acidic property of plain yogurt helps improve the texture of your hair. To keep your hair shiny and help prolong your color, mix a capful of apple cider vinegar with water to close your cuticle. Bananas contain oil and proteins that help strengthen your hair and give your hair a lot of shine (click here for Kevin Murphy’s favorite banana hair DIY recipe). You can always combine essential oils to any of these ingredients in your DIY dry hair recipes.
Aura says to apply your preferred DIY hair mask on clean hair or after a shampoo. “The only ingredients you would want to shampoo out are avocado, coconut oil and mayonnaise because those will make your hair really crazy if there’s any left in the hair.” Depending on the type of mask, leave it on for 20 minutes to an hour or for maximum hydration, over night.
