Featuring otherworldly precision and a stunning attention to detail, the Pipe Braid naturally has created a frenzy in the hair industry. Nicci Welsh is not only the inventor of a braid tutorial with millions of views but she’s also the woman breathing life back into braid content on Instagram all over the world. While she can’t take credit for its inception, the double Chinese ladder braid Nicci recently recreated on her page is equally as spectacular as her Pipe Braid. Ahead, the founder of her eponymous makeup academy explains what stylists need to achieve the double Chinese ladder braid including products, placement, and time to mastery.

What It Is
A double Chinese ladder consists of two main sections of hair that stay as the internal part of the braid and side sections that are knotted around them. A double Chinese ladder braid differs from a regular ladder braid in that a regular ladder braid does not sit closely to the scalp and a French braid is not as intricate.
The Most Challenging Part
Making sure your sections are pulled through smoothly so you don’t create lots of fuss.
How Long It Takes
I would say you can do this in 15 to 20 minutes.
What You’ll Need
A brush and a rat tail comb. You can use an elastic or elastic thread to secure it.
How to Prep
The double Chinese ladder braid works best on dirty hair that doesn’t have layers. On medium to fine hair, I love to spray Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray onto each section just before knotting them. For very fine and hair that slips easily, I use Oribe Swept Up Volume Powder Spray. On curly, textured hair I use Oribe Star Glow Styling Wax.
Time to Mastery
This was an easy one for me as it is similar to my Pipe Braid so I got it the first time I tried. If you are already braiding a lot, your mind quickly gets into the rhythm of this braid.
