Anything can happen in the salon – that’s part of the fun! But…sometimes, things can get a little, shall we say, out of control. We tapped 5 stylists to share their wildest, craziest or just all around most outrageous moments in the salon. From hair actually melting off (!) to a mid-balayage power outage – even the pros deal with their share of crazy pants.
Attack of the Paps
“As soon as I began to start styling Kendall Jenner for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2016, the paparazzi immediately swarmed over! Kendall and I were actually filming a takeover for Mane Addicts and the whole experience was outrageous! Kendall was super sweet, and the energy backstage was so crazy and exciting! I’m used to the paparazzi approaching my clients, but having the paparazzi backstage brought a whole new element.

A modeling agency contacted me last minute asking if I could tint back a models hair for a photoshoot she had the next day. I said yes, assuming it would be a quick gloss or two, as that what a “tint back” usually involves. The model arrived with rainbow-colored hair — and when I say rainbow, I LITERALLY mean rainbow. She needed to be a platinum blonde and all I could think is, ‘where is a magic wand when you need one?!’ We had to do multiple applications because some of the colors would not budge at all! After 7 hours (and many coffees) we finally got her back to blonde and walked out the door just before midnight.
The city of West Hollywood cut off electricity when I was half way through a balayage lightening process for a client – I needed heat to diffuse the hair and was in quite the pinch. Thankfully, some friends at the nearby Andy LeCompte Salon hooked me up until the electricity was on again.
I once had client come to get her hair relaxed. I forgot to ask her when was the last time she had her hair colored and proceeded to relax it. I took her to the shampoo bowl and just like that, her hair started to melt off – and it was right before she was going to an event for Obama.
The craziest salon experience that I had occurred when I had just lost my Mother. I was deeply depressed about her death and I went into the salon and shaved my long hair into a mohawk. I went from long brown hair to a platinum mohawk in one afternoon. It was a very liberating experience and it gave me a sense of regaining control of my life. I needed to move forward and here I am today. As my mom use to say “change your hair, change your life.”
