7 Top Celebrity Colorists Reveal Their Secret Formula for Beautiful Bronde Hair

When your client can’t decide if she wants to go blonde or brunette, what do you do? Suggest going bronde. The blonde-brunette hybrid hue has all the makings of an effortless mane with the low-maintenance level of a balayage—a win-win for colorists and indecisive clients alike. Flip through the gallery below for detailed bronde hair formulas, concocted by top colorists.

Sarah Conner

Her bronde hair formula:

  • For her base color—Frameisi Futura: 5n 15cc+ 6n 15 cc’s + 5c 15cc’s + 6c 15cc’s w/ 60 cc’s of 20 volume
  • Processing Time: 35 min
  • Shampoo and condition for highlights
  • Balayage highlights formula: Redken flashlift with 40 volume
  • Hand paint ribbons about two to four inches away from the root depending on client’s length of hair desired rooty-ness—be sure to leave space between each ribbon to create contrast and dimension.
  • Cover highlights with plastic then process for 30 to 35 minutes without heat to lift to a light golden blonde.
  • All over gloss: Redken Shades EQ: 1 oz 8gg 1oz 9aa 1/4 8c for 3-6 min depending on desired depth of golden caramel tones. The longer you leave the gloss on the more warm and caramel it will be.

  • Processing: Lift to pale yellow / condensed milk tone.
  • After rinsing all highlights: GLOSS 1 application: Damp hair, Root gloss, Bowl & Brush, From scalp to 1 inch down from scalp throughout hair.
  • Formula: Redken Shades EQ; 10 grams 6N, 10 grams 6NB, 20 grams Processing Solution.
  • Processing: 5 minutes and then use Wow Comb to blur line for 1 minute before rinsing.
  • GLOSS 2 application: Damp hair, Scalp to mid length throughout hair.

  • Recently I’m liking the Iles Formula 3 Step System for this texture. It is gentle and completely color safe on my highlights. It also polishes the cuticle without weighing down the hair or removing all of the hair’s natural movement. Step 1 is the Shampoo, Step 2 is the Conditioner, and Step 3 is a Finishing Serum. Both the Conditioner and the Finishing Serum work best when brushed through the hair for even distribution.

Dom Forletta

His bronde hair formula:

  • I highlighted her hair fine at the root for a soft grow out because brunettes especially tend to not love having a lot of maintenance with their color.
  • I tipped out most of her ends, but I did leave some of her brunette in there for added dimension. The key for bronde hair, for me, is pulling the highlights at the perfect tone so that her hair only needs minimal glossing.
  • The only toning I did on her was at the root using 5n=6nb to tone it down to a perfect golden brown (which is closer to her natural) while leaving her ends bright and dimensional to make the perfect bronde.
  • I love the Iles Formula for this! Sometimes the hair can become a little dry after lightening brunette hair so this shampoo and conditioner fully restores the hair back to a soft, luscious condition.

Shah Karegar

His bronde hair formula:

  • My client has a very beautiful natural color which is a level 6 dirty blonde.
  • I normally don’t change people’s natural color unless they want to go really blonde and are okay with the maintenance.
  • With this client, I just used balayage bleach (Flashlift Redken bleach) with 40 volume
  • Did my placement where I wanted it to be light by painting the bleach on the hair
  • Used heat for about 15 minutes or more depending on how light I wanted to go.
  • Then rinsed the bleach and used 9v Redken Shades and clear equal parts to tone the highlights a little cooler tones for five minutes.
  • To finish off the process, we used the Number 4 Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner to bring back some moisture and shine into the hair.
