The new year represents new beginnings — it’s a chance to set an intention and follow-through, and for many of us, that means a clean slate at hair care. We asked 7 pro stylists the resolutions you should stick to this year, and we’re feeling all sorts of inspiration.
Exfoliate Your Scalp! - Andrew Fitzsimmons
The benefits of exfoliating the skin, particularly on your face and body, are well known, but a lot of us forget our scalps (don't forget that it's still skin up there!). Incorporating a scalp scrub to your hair regime once a week will help deeply cleanse and clarify your scalp, clearing away dead skin cells, product buildup, excess oils, etc. My favorite scrub for scalp exfoliation is the NatureLab. TOKYO Perfect Shine Scalp Scrub, which is made with sugar crystals instead of salt - so you don't have to worry about it drying out your hair!via Instagram
Stop brushing so hard. - Cash Lawless
Friction is the invisible hair destroyer. If you can do one thing to help you grow long hair this would be it. Stop breaking it! Use the right brush, use a detangler, stop hacking at your hair for goodness sake, and be gentle!via Instagram
Nurture Your Hair - Chad Kenyon
The best 2020 hair resolution is to NURTURE our hair. Many of us think about hairstyling and hair cleansing, but hair nurturing is essential if we want our hair to shine and illuminate our features. It doesn’t need to be a lengthy, time-consuming daily reprieve - I recommend using Olaplex products and giving hair a treatment with Olaplex N°3 once a week or every 10 days.via Instagram
DEEP CONDITIONING!! - Ramon Garcia
If you're going to do anything differently this year, it should be using masks and deep conditioning the hair for 10-15 mins every 3 days. This will change the overall health of the hair -- it makes a world of a difference!via Instagram
See your stylist at least twice a year for a deep conditioning and trim. - Derick Monroe
Although budgets vary, it’s always important to see a pro about your hair, just as you go see your doctor — there are some things that stylists can diagnose that you can’t! Doing hair at home is cool if that’s what you have to do but make sure to check in to make sure your hair is on a healthy track.via Instagram
Focus on Gut Health - Lauren Paglionico
I am a firm believer that beauty starts within and your hair is a reflection of your health which means what you put in your body shows on the outside.
As we age, our cells change and the natural levels of collagen decrease. Taking a collagen supplement has been scientifically proven to promote a healthy scalp and healthy hair by increasing the building proteins which is what your hair is made of. (AKA: Keratin). Collagen can also prevent premature hair loss and increase new hair growth, promoting longer, thicker hair!via Instagram
Improve Your At-Home Hair Regime -Gina Rivera
You absolutely must have a good at-home hair regimen including an everyday shampoo and conditioner, plus a weekly deep conditioner and a clarifying shampoo -- or a DIY method, such as baking powder paste. Selecting the right products for this is key. I recommend something that includes biotin, collagen, B vitamins and peptides which can strengthen the hair as well as hydrate it. My favorite is Pure BioGen Complex by Gina. It has an amazing list of key ingredients that provides the perfect balance for any hair type.via Instagram
Educate! - Jeremy Taylor
There’s one hair resolution I definitely stick to, and that is to educate yourself and educate others. There’s always a chance to learn something new or refresh something that you might have forgotten about, whether it’s a hair color application or an approach to a haircut.via Instagram
