The Barbie blonde trend is everywhere thanks to BTS pics of the upcoming movie starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. The always sunny platinum blonde style is can be a major makeover or a style refresher, depending on your current color. We checked in with Wella Professionals Brand Ambassador and Chief Blonding Officer Zach Mesquit for a how to cheat sheet on recreating and maintaining the classic look.
“Barbie and blonde are synonymous,” says Zach. “I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve had clients ask for ‘Barbie blonde.’ Barbie is such an iconic feminine character, and her signature platinum blonde is what makes her who she is. I love it,” he adds.
How to Get Barbie Blonde
You don’t have to start out looking like blonde Barbie to get her hair color. Zach has the same technique for achieving the look, regardless of color or texture. “My approach is the same, I lift the hair to a clean level 10 blonde using Wella Professionals BlondorPlex Multi Blonde Dust-Free Powder Lightener. I always lift slowly using a low-volume developer for the best results. True ‘Barbie blonde’ is a level 10 lift with no toner. Wella Professionals Shinefinity is the perfect glaze to top off that color, giving it that extra shiny Barbie look.”
Taking Care of the Color
To keep up with your color, treat your hair like Barbie would. Zach recommends “monthly retouches” and a few other golden rules. “Always use a heat protector, no products containing sulfates, and of course, protein is key.”
As far as your Barbie regimen, at-home maintenance is everything.
“It’s all about the products you use,” says Zach. “I love the Wella Professionals EIMI Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray for whenever you are styling with heat. This product is formulated to nourish your hair and to protect it, while also smoothening it for a flawless shiny result.”
Barbie Blonde Inspo
Of course, we had to share some of our favorite iterations of the hair color trend so you can live life in plastic.
For those who don’t want to dye their tresses, opt for a wig. It will allow you to achieve the color perfectly. And, if you don’t like it, you can always take the wig off and start all over.
Go for a blonde that’s a little icier like this platinum hue. Barbie is always warm and welcoming, but who says your take on her signature hair color has to be?
This shade is a bit more tone-downed than Barbie’s platinum locks, which we love. You don’t need a bright blonde hue to seal the deal.
Play up the Barbie fantasy with some extensions to give you super long locks.
Go for a more lived-in look with a bright Barbie blonde balayage.
