Try These Unexpected Ways to Use Hot Rollers

Hot rollers are one of the most overlooked and underrated tools. Just because they’ve had a bad PR campaign doesn’t mean that you have to completely discard them when planning your next look. We polled celeb stylists and asked for their tips when it comes to using these as a secret weapon, take a read below!

For Body and Shine With Minimal Effort

If you’ve ever been a fan Chrissy Teigen or Gigi Hadid’s locks, you’ve probably been admiring the work of Laura Polko. She thinks hot rollers are great for getting body and shine without so much work. Her go-to rollers are T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers LUXE.  Her favorite part about that particular hot rollers model? “The dent free clips are game-changing,” she says. “[Also], the rollers have two heat settings and the material is soft on hair to lock in shine.” She likes to start with product-less, dry hair. The material that wraps around the rollers will take care of protecting strands so there is no need for prep work. “When putting rollers in, really brush through each section and make sure ends are flat on the roller and every hair is on it and not twisted around,” she continues. “Take note of where you want your hair parted. If it’s middle part, apply rollers on either side of the part. If it’s 90s sexy volume you’re looking for, make sure all the rollers on the top row are going straight back,” she advises.

To Create Ultra Glam Curls and Volume

Andrew Fitzsimons, the genius behind Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie, Kendall and Kris’s hair (say that three times fast!) uses hot rollers to create glamorous curls or when he is looking for extra volume. Unlike Laura, he opts for a small amount of product before he starts rolling. “Apply NatureLab’s Perfect Volume Blowout Jelly to damp hair. This preheat jelly will be the key to adding body and lifting those locks which also acts as a great heat protectant for the hot rollers,” he says. After the curls have set in, he suggests taking a large paddle brush to the whole masterpiece. “Brush the ends to break the curls and style as you see fit,” Andrew says. For his final step, he likes to set the look with Pai-Shau Imperial Hold Hairspray.

On the Mid-shaft and Ends For Oomph

Allen Ruiz, Aveda’s Global Style Director knows that hot rollers are ideal for creating glamour and volume. He uses them any time the mid-shaft, ends or any other part of the hair needs a little oomph. “They are very user-friendly and versatile, giving our clients lots of options for application and finishes,” he says. “For a modern looking wave or curly look, I wouldn’t go any smaller than 1.5 inches in diameter for your roller size. I recommend sectioning the hair into four parts, then apply the rollers section by section.”

While on, you let the rollers cool for 15-20 minutes. After this time, you start unrolling them carefully one by one, starting from the back and moving to the front. “If your hair is too curly after using rollers and not the loose waves you were hoping for, don’t use a brush. Instead, run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls,” Allen says. The final step in his volumizing routine? “To set your style, I recommend using a light mist of Aveda Air Control Light Hold Hair Spray. For even more volume, flip your head upside down and apply the spray near the roots.”

Hot Rollers Work on Chin Length Hair Too

Garren, co-Founder of R+Co and the guru behind Priyanka Chopra’s loose waves has a specific use for hot rollers on chin or shoulder-length hair. “[If you] wear a side part, then you would use the large electric rollers after hair is dry,” he begins.  “You would apply one at the crown, then take the whole section of the side part, over-directed, with one whole roller. Take the one big side section and put one big roller under. Then put three along the bottom of the back of the head,” his instructions conclude. He guarantees a silky, pageboy hairstyle resulting from the whole transaction. He likes R+Co’s Chiffon Styling Mousse as a primer for this specific look.
