Forget Socks, TikTok Users Are Now Curling Their Hair With Scrunchies

Written by Ashley Locke

There are no shortage of hair hacks on TikTok, many of which have gone viral.

Remember last year when everyone was using socks to curl their strands? All it took was a pair of tube socks to achieve voluminous coils and beachy waves. Now, people have moved on from socks to curling their hair with scrunchies. Yes, scrunchies. In the beginning of 2021, our “For You Page” on TikTok was flooded with hair tutorials using scrunchies as a heatless curling method.

How to Curl Your Hair With Scrunchies

While each tutorial we’ve seen is slightly different, they all follow the same steps. The first is to dampen your hair if it isn’t already. Next, grab your scrunchies. It doesn’t seem like the type of scrunchies you use matters, so whichever ones you have lying around will do just fine.

When you wrap your hair around the scrunchies, you’ll want to do it going away from your face and then roll up. You’ll use them almost the same way you use hair rollers. To secure your scrunchies, wrap one end over the other. Once you’ve finished, it’s time to go to bed and wake up to take them out.

The TikTok tutorials below are great to follow when you finally decide to curl your hair with scrunchies.

But Does Curling Your Hair With Scrunchies Actually Work?

From the tutorials above, you can see the results are incredible. Sadly, that’s not the case with everyone who tries this hack. New York City hairstylist Matt Newman, otherwise known as @mattloveshair on TikTok, tried this trend out for himself. While he was excited to try this heatless hair tutorial, he wasn’t happy about the massive headache and tension it caused. Matt even deemed it a “#hairfail” on his TikTok.

Matt’s not the only one whose hair didn’t turn out as expected. There are a handful of other users who were met with disastrous results after trying this trend. Maybe not disastrous, but definitely not what they had intended.

Clearly, curling your hair with scrunchies isn’t for everyone. It really comes down to technique, though it does appear that those with longer strands tend to have better results. If you’re not pleased with the outcome after your first attempt, try again. Eventually, you’ll get the hang of it. And if you don’t, there’s no shame in using a curling wand.

For those who do end up trying this trend, we’d love to know how it works out for you. Be sure to tag us on Instagram and TikTok @maneaddicts so we can see the results!
