7 Blonde Hair Trends That Will Be Everywhere in 2022

The fact that we’re weeks away from a new year is terrifying and also somewhat exciting. We’re mainly excited for 2022 because it brings new hair trends to try. For those of you who happen to be blonde or will make the switch next year, there are a handful of trends you should absolutely keep your eye on. We reached out to some blonde hair color specialists to get the lowdown on the top blonde hair color trends in 2022. Find all the inspiration you need below!

Lived-In Looks

The lived-in look isn’t going anywhere in 2022, Tri Cities blonde and extensions specialist Kathy Nunez shares. She even shares some advice for colorists on creating these looks on their clientele. “New and advanced techniques continue to develop utilizing baby lights, teasy lights, and hair painting to deliver that perfect lived-in look. You will want to perfect your root shadowing and toning skills, as they are necessary to deliver these gorgeous trends throughout this next year.”

Money Piece Highlights

Money piece highlights have been one of the trendiest takes on highlights in quite some time. And, according to all the blonde specialists we spoke with, they’ll continue to be a popular blonde hair color trend in 2022. Kathy shares that it’ll continue to be on trend, though with a “more subtle, natural effect.”

Nova Arts Salon blonde specialist Seola Kim mentions the money piece highlight trend will take an even more ’90s turn. “People are so into the ’90s right now. Clients still want the money piece on their highlight but they will look for something ’90s and a more natural look. Instead of being a super ashy tone, slightly warm or neutral tones will be more popular.”

Lowlights for Dimension

Dimension will be a major focus for blonde hues in 2022, as it offers a more natural hue. Kathy shares that “adding dimension to previously lightened hair with lowlights is a great option for the client who wants to stay blonde but wants a more natural look.” She also points out that “it can also be appealing for those clients who want color that is easier to maintain, meaning they can wait longer between appointments.” We are the clients she’s talking about.

Arizona blonde and extensions specialist Marissa Larson also agrees that dimension will be big this next year. She notes that we’ll specifically see more “blonde hair with a lot of depth underneath and a brighter, but blended top section.” For stylists, she recommends the following: “Focus on application. More drop outs and less foils. Gloss everything on top and leave the bottom raw.”

Warmer Tones

Platinum and icy blondes will still be popular, though warmer tones are about to take over. Because they can brighten up any complexion, Kathy says her “clients are craving a little warmth.” She notes a warmer blonde “can easily be achieved by adding gold to your formula. Golden tones reflect more light, giving off a gorgeous glow, while cooler tones absorb light and can do the opposite.”

When it comes to warmer blondes, Marissa shares to “think Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” She notes it’s a perfect shade for those with blonde that feels ashy and dull. Her advice to stylists on achieving the perfect warm blonde is “to lift the client’s natural level a shade or two lighter. I love to use Redken Color Gels with 15 or 20 Vol. The shades 8na/7na cancel out brass and give just the right amount of warmth. Process for 15 minutes. I recommend not lifting anyone’s natural level that is darker than a 6.”

Yellow Hair

This might be the blonde hair color trend we’re the most excited to see. Marissa shares that “healthy, yellow hair will be the new icy white blonde” and is perfect for those who want to make a statement. When it comes to creating this look, stylists, it’s all about trusting the process. “Think banana peel lift and then no toner, you heard me,” she says. “Grab your clear gloss and trust the process. Play around more with high lift versus lightener.”

Embracing Grays

Many of us spent a lot of time learning to love our grays in 2020 and 2021. That will still be a major hair trend in 2022, according to Seola. She shares that, this go around, it’s all about “blending gray hair with highlights to make it more natural. It’s the perfect way to camouflage them.” Or, you can use it to really highlight your grays. Who says you have to hide them?

DIY Color

Because we spent so much time at home, we got a little too comfortable experimenting with color. And that will continue to be the case in 2022. Seola mentions this will be particularly true for blondes who want to add a pop of color to their locks. “I noticed that a lot of clients love to add pink or lavender to their hair at home. As a colorist, I make them a blonde and then they enjoy blonde hair with their DIY color. It’s like collaboration with the client,” she shares.
