3 Ways Drinking Caffeine Benefits Your Hair

Caffeine is a dietary staple for many of us. Whether we consume it in our coffee or tea, we need the energy benefits it offers. What you may not be aware of are all the hair benefits caffeine also promises.

Caffeine isn’t just a great way to keep you awake, it can also improve your tresses in a number of ways.

1. Promotes Hair Growth

“Numerous studies have shown that caffeine can be beneficial for hair growth,” Dr. Karhade shares. There are a number of reasons why, including “elongation of the hair shaft, a prolonged growing phase of hair (called anagen phase), stimulation of hair cell growth, and increased circulation to the hair follicles.”

We know that’s a lot of sciencey jargon to explain how caffeine promotes hair growth. The only thing you need to understand is that caffeine does in fact help lengthen your strands.

2. Combats Hair Thinning

Not only does caffeine lengthen your hair, it also strengthens it.

Dr. Karhade notes, “One study showed that a caffeine-containing shampoo led to fewer hairs being pulled out six months after regular use. Therefore, caffeine-containing shampoos are recommended for those with some types of hair thinning.”

Those who suffer from hair loss have even seen improvements in hair growth because of caffeine.

“Other studies have shown improvement in androgenic alopecia ( male-/female-pattern hair thinning) with regular use of a caffeine-containing shampoo,” Dr. Karhade points out.

3. Creates Softer, Shinier Hair

Hair growth is the major benefit of caffeine, though an additional bonus is making your strands softer and shinier. Using it in a rinse can help your locks retain their moisture and reduce frizziness.

Caffeine even protects against UV radiation, which will keep your tresses looking their best.

It’s important to note that simply drinking coffee won’t allow you to reap these hair benefits of caffeine. If you want caffeine to work for you, the best way to use it is topically. Like previously mentioned, using caffeine-containing shampoos, conditioners, and more will help lengthen your locks, thicken them, and make them shinier.
