What can CBD not do? This magical elixir has grown in popularity because of the panacea of solutions it offers. In addition to helping with sleep, anxiety and inflammation, word on the street is that this non-psychoactive ingredient can also help with hair loss. Is CBD for hair loss a thing? Or are the CBD fanatics blowing smoke? We talk to two pros to find out.
It’s Loaded with Fatty Acids + Vitamins
One of the main characteristics of CBD is that it’s made up of good-for-you ingredients. “Most CBD products are high in essential fatty acids such as Omega 3, 6 and 9,” begins Eddie Fatakhov, M.D. “These fatty acids can help with hydration of hair and maintaining a healthy scalp. In addition to the fatty acid hydration, CBD is high in antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E. All of these antioxidants help prevent and repair hair damage,” continues our doc. Michael Bungarner, Founder of Cannuka agrees, “CBD oil contains all the amino acids which help strengthen hair in a big way! CBD is also high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids. This is a huge benefit and helps keep your hair (and skin) hydrated.”
How to Use CBD to Reap Benefits for Hair
“The application of CBD directly to the scalp may improve blood circulation in the localized area, acting as an anti-inflammatory to hair follicles. Minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium are also in CBD; these all could be beneficial to overall scalp and hair health,” Dr. Fatakhov says. Nevertheless, the way you apply CBD can be a big marker of how beneficial it will actually be for hair growth. “If it is being used as a shampoo, the application of CBD directly to the scalp may improve blood circulation in the localized area, acting as an anti-inflammatory to hair follicles,” he says. Mr. Bungarner also reports that his clients have been using his CBD Cleansing Body Bar as a shampoo to help rid themselves of eczema. “I believe this is due to CBD being a powerful anti-inflammatory and our Manuka honey naturally healing their skin. I would think calming your scalp would ultimately help hair growth,” he concludes.
So, Can it Prevent Hair Loss?
While the reported benefits of CBD for hair loss are not yet proven, word-of-mouth has ushered in new popularity for CBD. Before you go dumping a bottle of the expensive stuff on your hair, Dr. Fatakhov reminds us, “The main known benefits of CBD, in general, are relief of stress, anxiety, and insomnia.” That being said, these stressors could very well be the reason why you’ve notices a loss in hair, “Stress, anxiety, and insomnia can all cause hair loss in otherwise healthy individuals,” says our doctor. While the benefits of CBD on hair growth still need to be properly tested and documented, CBD has been shown to help with overall hair health and dandruff. Although we can’t for certain say CBD helps with hair regrowth, it can’t hurt to consider adding CBD to your hair health routine.
