Are you interested in donating your hair? It’s one of the best reasons we can think of for a chop. Not only will you feel lighter, but you’ll also know you’re helping someone who will really appreciate the gift of your mane. For everything you need to know about donating your tresses, we reached out to BeYOUtiful‘s president, Matt Coulter. Keep scrolling to have all your questions about how to donate hair answered!
How Long Does Your Hair Need to Be?
The first step of donating hair is to set a length goal. The BeYOUtiful Foundation accepts hair that is 10 inches or longer. “The more length you can donate, the more of an impact you will make,” says Matt. Other donation organizations require a minimum of 12 inches of hair. It will vary based on where you choose to donate, but we’d suggest sticking to 12 inches just to be safe.
Who Can Donate Hair?
Anyone is a candidate to donate. “Male or female, old or young, it doesn’t matter every donation is equally important,” Matt emphasizes. While all are encouraged to donate, the foundation doesn’t accept any synthetic or over-processed hair because it’s not usable for the wigs that are being created. If you’re unsure if your hair is up to par, ask your stylist. “They will be able to help make this decision,” he notes.
How to Donate Hair to BeYOUtiful
Though BeYOUtiful is based in Los Angeles, you don’t have to be local to donate. “We accept donations from any and all salons,” says Matt. All you have to do is mail your hair, cut into a ponytail, in a sealed Ziploc bag and placed in an envelope to the address provided.
Why You Should Donate Your Hair
Donating hair is one of the most noble things you can do and makes a huge difference for a relatively small sacrifice. The Foundation relies on a selected group of beauty professionals to ensure all donated hair goes straight to the cause and that every woman who receives a wig gets the support they need. “Your own contribution of hair or having your clients chop off theirs makes this program possible. Together we can make sure that every woman has the opportunity to feel absolutely beYOUtiful. It’s all of you that make it possible,” adds Matt.
