Twist-outs are one of the most common hairstyles for natural hair. It’s a style that retains curl texture and higher levels of moisture than just air drying your curls. To keep your hair healthy and hydrated, and show your curls a little more TLC, it may be time to consider this hairstyle (if you haven’t already). If you’re unsure of how to achieve the style, don’t worry because we’re here to help! We tapped master cosmetologist and educator at The Mane Choice, Ebony Bomani, to share quick and easy steps for achieving the perfect twist-out that anyone can do.
The first step to a fantastic twist-out is thoroughly shampooing, conditioning, and detangling with moisturizing products. Clean hair absorbs moisture better and enables the styler(s) to be more effective.
Section towel-dried hair into manageable sections, to have better control and keep hair detangled.
This step is crucial as it defines the shape and size of your twist. Part hair in sub-sections according to the size of twists you want. Larger twists will produce a more wavy texture; medium twists will produce more curls; small twists will result in coils. Remember, the smaller the twists, the less volume you’ll have.
Evenly saturate product thorough out each section, then securely twist from root to end. (If your hair dries out, mist it with water before applying product). It’s best to use products that are suited for your hair texture and density. The Mane Choice Ancient Egyptian 24 Karat Glistening Gold Twisting Gel is a gem for twist outs for curl types 3 and 4 with medium to high density. It provides an immense amount of moisture, a flexible hold, and a brilliant shine. If you want more volume, or you have curl types 3 and 4 with low to medium density, you may want to indulge in The Mane Choice Pink Lemonade & Coconut Mousse or Curl Boosting Sherbet. Both deliver lots of hydration and crazy shine as well.
Allow hair to dry 100% before manipulation. Air dry or use a hair dryer. Remember, no touching!
Apply a little bit of oil on your fingertips, for nourishment and added shine, and carefully unravel each strand. Separate to desired fullness.
Fluff and go! To preserve your style and retain moisture overnight, it’s best to cover your hair with a silk bonnet.
