FEKKAI’s Sheer Dry Shampoo is Ozone-Safe, Sustainable, and My New Holy Grail

My life is a delicate balance of two identities: someone that will avoid washing their hair until absolutely necessary (hello, procrastination) and a fine-haired, oily-scalped individual. This means dry shampoo is a non-negotiable in my hair care routine. And I’ve tried them all—brush-on, powder, DIY, mousse, and mist—but aerosols continue to take the cake for their performance and ease. However, I fully recognize that aerosols aren’t the *best* for the environment. So when FEKKAI sent word that their latest launch contained the world’s first (!) ozone-safe aerosol dry shampoo, my curiosity was piqued. The Clean Stylers Sheer Dry Shampoo claims to be completely invisible, totally vegan and sulfate-free, and better for our planet? If you’re like me and into keeping your strands grease-free and lowering your carbon footprint, you’ll want to keep reading.

What Does “Ozone-Safe” Mean?

Let’s start with a little hairspray history. In 1990, the Clean Air Act was amended to increase ozone protection, which meant that aerosols containing chlorofluorocarbons (a.k.a. CFCs) were eliminated—which were known to deplete ozone levels. As a workaround, they were replaced with HFCs/hydrofluorocarbons. While they weren’t great and still contributed to ozone creation, they were somewhat better than CFCs. An improvement, but not the best.

Enter: Honeywell Solstice® Propellant technology. According to FEKKAI, Honeywell Solstice® Propellant is “nonflammable, non-ozone-depleting, VOC-exempt (U.S. EPA and CARB), with an ultra-low global warming potential of less than one percent.” In short, it’s an ozone-safe aerosol with all the performance of traditional aerosols, but without contributing to ground-level ozone creation

FEKKAI is one of the first brands to adopt this technology, making it a landmark moment in clean beauty. And it was no small feat. “I waited over three years before developing hair sprays because I did not want to stand behind anything that would negatively impact the environment,” explains company founder Frédéric Fekkai, who has long been a proponent of clean hair care. “I actually just got an email from a former Honeywell employee that remembers me asking about this technology 10 years ago when it was in the early stages of development—this has been a long-awaited passion project,” says Fekkai.

To round out their eco-friendly commitments, FEKKAI has used post-consumer recycled materials in product components and incorporated eco-certified, Quali-tree sustainably sourced raw ingredients. Win-win.

A Review of FEKKAI’s Sheer Dry Shampoo and Ozone-Safe Aerosol

As a dry shampoo connoisseur, I have rigorous standards for a product to enter my holy grail inner circle. The Sheer Dry Shampoo (available now on Ulta and FEKKAI.com) checked every box. It’s ultra-lightweight and virtually invisible, meaning it doesn’t make my scalp feel like I’ve just blanketed it in a chalky layer of baby powder. I just add a few spritzes to my bangs which keeps them from sticking to my forehead—even during an LA heatwave. When used all over, it revives my day three hair without completely zapping moisture.

The magic is in their naturally-derived ingredients. Kaolin clay helps absorb excess oil without clogging hair follicles, magnesium-rich apple extract helps protect follicles, and glycerin adds much-needed hydration. The result is a freshly-washed feel that’s not dry, brittle, or noticeably packed with product. I am blown away by the fact that a clean hair product feels so luxurious. In fact, it’s right on par with high-end stylers that still contain common hydrofluorocarbons like isobutane and propane. After all, there are plenty of times I’ve accepted that clean formulas meant a slight sacrifice in performance.

This is a sentiment Fekkai understands and wants to change. “Consumers tend to think cleaner, sustainable products don’t perform compared to those that don’t fit this category. I’ve made it my mission to show them this is false and I’m excited to offer a full range of high-performance styling products at the highest quality and reduced impact,” says Fekkai.
