As part of our series, Hair-apy Sesh, we’re asking the hair industry’s most-trusted mavens to divulge their secrets about what products get lifted from their kit, their idea of the most overrated and underrated hair tricks, plus their favorite high-price-tag and drugstore buys that confidently carry them through their bustling careers.
Below: Los Angeles-based hairstylist and L’Oréal-Mizani Ambassador Peter Mazilu @petermazilu
What’s the most stolen product from your kit?
For sure Mizani’s 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Treatment because it’s the Jack of all trades. It’s a leave-in conditioner, detangler, heat protectant, primer, style refresher and the list goes on…plus it smells amazing!
What’s the most underrated hair hack or trick?
HEAT PROTECTANT. Some are suspicious as to if heat protectants actually work, but they absolutely do! I have seen the difference between clients who use heat protectant and those who do not.
What’s the most overrated hair hack or trick?
Coconut oil treatment is not for everyone! For those with fine to medium hair, coconut oil can be very beneficial as it is rich in fatty acids and protein which finer hair needs—however this is exactly why coconut oil can be harmful to those with thick, course hair because it can cause protein overload which will lead to dry, brittle strands and even breakage.
What’s one expensive product that’s worth every penny?
Ibiza Blonde Boar Bristle Round Brushes because they work extremely well for frizzy, fine hair. They also give more tension than ceramic brushes for smoothness yet not too much tension where you lose all body and volume.
If you only had time to use one product on a client, what would it be?
Sebastian Whipped Creme! It’s amazing at conditioning the hair, gives great volume and hold all while being extremely light. Love using this creme mousse on fresh, towel-dried hair from root to tip for a quick blowout because it does it all! (An especially amazing styling product for over-processed blondes.)
