Powerhouse actress and entrepreneur Gabrielle Union has officially extended her resume to include hair product founder with Flawless by Gabrielle Union. The affordable line (all products are under $10) was developed alongside her celeb stylist and hair bestie Larry Sims two years ago. After hearing nonstop hype, I decided to test some of her hero products to find out if it’s the inflation-proof hack for A-list-worthy locks I’ve been searching for. About the Flawless by Gabrielle Union
Flawless by Gabrielle Union aims to deliver much-needed hydration to every hair type but was designed for those with texture. According to the brand, “the products are infused with exotic, hydrating ingredients such as Brazilian bacuri butter, rice oil complex, and lilac leaf extract, leaving out harmful additives such as sulfates, silicones, and parabens. The Flawless collection aims to help individuals find their custom routine to hydrate, define, repair, and protect.”
Get to Know the Products
Flawless offers a complete experience to take your wash day from start to finish, beginning with a Hydrating Detangling Shampoo which gently cleanses and restores elasticity while making hair more manageable thanks to a Brazilian bacuri butter and rice oil complex. You can follow that up with a 3 Minute Restoring Conditioner, which delivers the moisture you can expect from a heavier leave-in without the wait. It’s best for “dry, brittle, and over-processed hair” and is infused with Brazilian bacuri butter and moringa oil to instantly hydrate, repair damage, and protect against future breakage.
As the goal is hydration, there are enough products to choose from that will do just that—penetrating strands and helping reverse damage including the Repairing Deep Conditioning Masque, an intense treatment meant to help undo excessive heat and chemical damage via biotin, creatine, and a rice oil complex. The 5 Butter Masque protects against breakage thanks to a unique butter blend of shea, cupuacu, murumuru, and mango butters. Once you’re out of the shower, Union has you covered with the Detangling Leave-In Conditioner, making hair easier to comb because of a blend of Brazilian bacuri butter and coconut oil. For the finishing touch, there’s the Defining Curl Cream, so you can beat frizz and enhance curls minus a crunch, à la shea butter and pequi oil.
My Flawless by Gabrielle Union Review
The first thing I noticed about the products was the fresh scent—it’s a faint citrus, lemon-lime smell that is apparent without being shocking or too much (at least to me). There’s nothing worse than having to stop using great hair care because of an overwhelming scent.
I tried the Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and 3 Minute Restoring Conditioner to start my Flawless experience and I wasn’t disappointed. Though the line is made without silicon or parabens, I’m still able to get a decent lather and my hair feels clean. It doesn’t necessarily target the scalp and I think topping it off with an exfoliant is a good idea for anyone with higher-level buildup. The conditioner seems to do the job in three minutes which is crucial as all minutes are key.
I tested out the Repairing Deep Conditioning Masque but only left it on for the remainder of the shower—I’m not hanging around for 20 minutes. Although I didn’t give it a chance to work to its full potential, I loved how thick it was, and it immediately left my hair softer. I am officially cleansed, de-tangled, and conditioned. I applied a few spritzes of the Detangling Leave-In Conditioner before giving my hair another brush through (I already brushed when wet post-conditioner) and generously slathered on the Defining Curl Cream. All the products have the same scent, which means you can use the whole line without smelling like the first floor of a department store.
Overall, I give Flawless by Gabrielle Union my seal of approval—it helped define my curls and make my hair less frazzled overall. You can’t beat the cost, and the products feel higher-end than their price point. If I had to pick one standout, I would go for the 3 Minute Conditioner, which leaves my hair softer and more manageable in a hurry.
