Scalp damage? Check. Ultra-brittle, natural texture? Double check. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on an endless quest to find the right nontoxic products that provide my hair with the ingredients it needs to thrive.
After many trials and tribulations, I stumbled upon an awe-inspiring brand, Flora & Curl. I deeply connected with the founder Rose Ovensehi’s natural texture journey and product formulation story. Their plant-derived ingredients nourish, hydrate, soothe and protect all curl types. Their philosophy and organic, yet potent formulas prove you don’t need harsh chemicals to nurture your locks back to perfect health. I spoke to Rose about why this brand is so unique, key ingredients damaged hair needs to blossom and more.
The brand was also kind enough to supply me with a few things to try for myself. Read on below for what Rose had to share and my experience with the products!
Mane Addicts: Walk us through your journey to finding the best natural ingredients for Flora & Curl’s products.
Rose Ovensehi: When I returned to my natural texture, my scalp was damaged after years of chemically processing and straightening my hair. I would often leave the relaxer on my hair for over an hour, which would leave my scalp burnt and sore. In returning natural, I discovered that many products on the market were formulated with poor quality or harsh ingredients. Nothing ever seemed to treat my hair with the love that I felt it deserved.
I have always been inspired by the potent power of nature. I began researching how I could harness the power of botanicals to meet the basic needs of my naturally dry hair. My formulas, developed in my (kitchen) lab, were filled with high quality, potent, plant-powered ingredients and were free from artificial fragrances.
Flora & Curl is the creation of my shared journey to restore the health of my scalp and truly hydrate my curls. I launched an inspirational blog to further the discussion about healthy textured hair. In doing so, I was able to connect with an amazing community of women learning about their natural curls, who equally desired extra-moisturized hair. I knew that I wanted to distinguish my brand in an industry with a lot of greenwashed marketing and heavy ingredient claims.
MA: What do you think really sets Flora & Curl apart from other brands?
RO: Flora & Curl was born to disrupt a hair care industry that is ruled by diluted products and low-quality ingredients. Manufacturers are finding new ways to produce cheaply by using ultra refined and processed ‘natural’ ingredients in low quantities. I wanted to change this. Compared to conventional products, Flora & Curl is 100% free from synthetic fragrancing and is powered by high performance, botanically active ingredients (plant, seeds, fruit and flower derived oils and butters), taking a spa-like and wellness approach to haircare. The result is a haircare range that encourages women with textured hair to enjoy their self care and hair care routine, all at once.
MA: Can you share what key ingredients textured hair needs to return to health after any serious chemical or heat damage?
RO: Once hair has suffered any damage, it’s important to avoid heat and any chemicals whilst the hair is being restored back to health. Treat hair with deep conditioners and use products with moisturizing ingredients such as Shea butter, coconut oil, avocado and Aloe Vera. All of which can be found in our products from our ‘Hydrate Me’ range and our African Citrus Superfruit Hair Oil to our ‘Protect Me’ range.
MA: Which of your products do you most recommend for those looking to protect their scalp and boost their natural curl pattern?
RO: To protect the scalp, it could help to do a deep cleansing every 3-4 weeks or when needed. For this, we recommend our Coconut Mint Curl Refresh Clay Wash. It visibly enhances curl definition and encourages curl responsiveness to products. It cleans curls gently, yet effectively while conditioning and replenishing the moisture your hair needs. Our African Citrus Superfruit Hair Oil is also a multi-tasking hair savior. It can be used in a variety of ways to benefit your hair, such as an overnight hot oil treatment. It also helps to instantly seal in moisture, protects and promotes healthy growth.
My Review of the Products
Flora & Curl generously provided me with several goodies to put to the test. These samples included their Organic Rose & Honey Cream Shampoo/Conditioner, leave-in detangler and Coconut Mint Curl Refresh Clay Wash. I decided to start with the shampoo and conditioner set to give my coils some much-needed TLC. This dynamic duo is rich in hydrating oats, vitamin B, rose flower water and honey to hydrate and cleanse simultaneously. One of the biggest issues I’ve faced with my thick, natural texture is uneven moisture distribution. The bottom layer of my locks retains moisture easily, while the top (most likely due to sun exposure), is perpetually dry. It seemed that no matter how many hair masks I did, the issue always persisted, until using this shampoo and conditioner set. My scalp has never felt so soft and silky. Manageability is at an all-time high and I’m finding far less hair in my brush week after week.
This brings me to the clay wash. I’d only ever used a clay-based product on my face before this so I was very curious to see what it could do for my curls. Infused with Peppermint and Eucalyptus, this cleansing formula is designed to purify the scalp of build-up while protecting and conditioning stressed out strands. Cleansing out product build-up was high on my priority list as it can be difficult to thoroughly wash out everything when you have coarse hair.
After just a few uses, I can honestly say this product is a game-changer for those with a similar hair type. It works incredibly well, but doesn’t strip your hair of its natural oils. It adds next-level shine and definition. In addition to making those curls really pop, it works seamlessly with the other products. In the past, if I used too many moisturizers at once, my scalp would become greasy – not a good combo with natural texture. With this system? Not the case. It is a bit messy because you hand-make the paste with water, but the results are more than worth it. Overall, if you have thick, textured hair and only want to feed your hair the best, then I’m happy to report that these products will be your new prized possessions.
