Even with a hardcore bleaching routine, or stressful environmental factors, you can salvage the integrity of your hair with a few simple dietary additions to your daily meals. We got the scoop on how to eat your way to healthier hair thanks to Registered Dietician Farah Fahad, founder of The Farah Effect.
Brunch dates just got better! Those giant omelets and egg-topped avocado toasts are actually a great way to step up your hair game. Eggs are full of strand-building proteins–one egg alone has six grams! They also contain collagen, keratin, sulfur, vitamin B, and biotin for the scalp and hair. Eggs also provide plenty of amino acids, iron for strength, zinc for shine and beta-carotene for scalp love.
Finally, a reason to justify your love of macaroons and everything coconut! Coconuts and coconut oil are extremely nourishing for the inside of your body and resonate on the outside with your hair and skin. Coconuts are full of healthy fats, minerals and vitamins that strengthen your hair and add shine.
What isn’t avocado good for? Whether it’s mashed up into guacamole or served on a salad, avocado adds much needed fat to a classic plant-based diet–fat that many conscientious eaters sometimes forget is needed for overall strength. Avocado is full of an antioxidant called alpha-tocopherol that fights against free radicals. These free radicals can dull and stress out your hair. It also has copper, which helps to build collagen and elastin in the body, especially the skin that holds hair follicles.
4. PUMPKIN SEEDS
Pumpkin seeds are high in Omega-3s, which are important for shiny, soft hair. These seeds are a rich source of vitamins A, E and K, as well as zinc and biotin. Pumpkin seeds contain linoleic and oleic acid, which are oils that impact androgen levels in the body (lack of androgen is believed to be the primary cause of hair loss.) They also are chock full of cucurbitin, a unique amino that is responsible for its effect on hair growth.Throw them on a salad, or on top of your favorite plant-based side dish, or just enjoy as a mid-afternoon pick me up.
Next time, top your granola or acai bowl with antioxidant-rich blueberries! These juicy berries are packed full of vitamins A, C and E which increase collagen stimulation and oxygenation of the body, and result in hair growth.
Pop some almonds in your mouth post-workout and you’re already on your way to a great head of hair. Almonds are full of healthy fats, vitamins (like vitamin E) and proteins. All nuts and seeds are great for your hair, but almonds in particular are a strength-building, go-to for those on the move, making them a perfect beauty snack.
