Gold Is the Extra Ingredient Your Hair Needs for a Deeper Clean and Shinier Strands

Gold is the gift that keeps on giving—and we’re talking more than jewelry. Not only can you eat the stuff, but it’s also great for your skin and hair (because of course it is). What can’t gold do? We checked in with Philip B., the founder and stylist behind the Philip B. Botanicals brand, and Margaret de Heinrich de Omorovicza, co-founder of Omorovicza, for why all that glitters is really golden. Discover the hair benefits of gold below!

Gold Hair Benefits

“Colloidal gold is known for its ability to heal micro-damage,” Omorovicza tells Mane Addicts. This supernatural ability makes it an ideal skin and scalp care ingredient, especially for those with sensitive, sun-damaged, and acne-scarred skin. “Colloidal gold creates a protective shield across the skin, preventing the accumulation of free radicals which may cause further damage,” she adds.

“Adding gold gives hair a super deep clean and alleviates buildup or residue. It is also beneficial in slowing the aging process,“ says Philip, who emphasizes that the benefits extend beyond just the hair shaft. Using gold will benefit the scalp in the same way it does facial skin because it increases cell renewal and speeds up circulation, which supports healthy hair growth. Let’s not forget that your “scalp is dermis too,” Philip reminds us, only it’s also filled with hundreds of thousands more oil glands and follicles.

You can’t go wrong with a precious metal like gold (in general, but also for scalp and hair care) as it “will slow collagen depletion and increase elasticity and circulation to help with anti-aging. “It can also help lighten and brighten,” he adds.

Gold is as effective as it is because “colloidal gold reinforces the skin’s natural protective barrier, intensely nourishing damaged skin whilst increasing cell activity and circulation to boost healing and protect against cellular aging,” notes Omorovicza.

Going for the Gold

To incorporate gold (or anything gold-like) into your daily routine, Omorovicza advises seeking out gold in serums and moisturizers. “At Omorovicza we have an entire Gold Collection comprising five facial skincare products and two body products, all of which feature the healing benefits of colloidal gold,” she says.

For more specific haircare, Philip B.’s Russian Amber Imperial Gold Masque relies on mica, which is absolutely able to emulate the same level of shimmer and shine that 24k gold does, but is less cost-prohibitive. “In terms of the overall benefits of the product, we are able to create an ultimate anti-aging, highly restorative formulation that achieves bounce and body, life and luster to the hair,” Philip describes. “We use a time-released moisture system to keep the hydration and shine long after you use the product. Peapod proteins, rich fatty acids, and essential oils soothe, smooth, and seal with amino acids, while glycerin pulls the moisture into the hair and keeps it there. Gold is certainly good for hair.”
