The Most Complementary Hair Colors for a Cool Skin Tone

Using your skin tone to determine your hair color is a crucial, but often overlooked step. Just because you can wear any hair color under the sun, doesn’t mean it will complement your complexion. That’s why you want to pay extra close attention to your skin tone. If you happen to have a cool skin tone (or at least, think you do), we’ve got exactly what you’re looking for. Scroll below to discover the best hair colors for a cool skin tone!

What Is a Cool Skin Tone?

Before you scroll through the list of shades, you should be sure you have a cool skin tone. When we say skin tone, we’re actually referring to your undertone. Both those with fair or deep complexions can fall into this category, so don’t think because your skin is darker you can’t have a cool undertone. With a cool skin tone, you tend to have a blueish undertone. An easy way to determine if you have this skin tone is to look at the veins on your wrist. If they appear to be blue, you have a cool skin tone. If they’re green or blue-green, you have a warm or neutral skin tone.

Another way to determine your undertone is to simply look at your visage. For those with fair faces, your skin will appear pink or blue. Those with medium and deep skin tones will have a complexion that is purple or red.

Best Hair Colors for Cool Skin Tones

Now that you’ve determined you have a cool undertone, this is where the fun begins. As far as hair hues go, you’ll want to stick to cooler shades. This means lighter and ashy blondes, along with lighter browns and true reds. Avoid anything that is golden or orangey because they won’t complement your skin tone accordingly. Below are a handful of shades we think look stunning on those with cooler undertones.

Platinum Blonde

Platinum blonde is a great color for cool skin tones, as it really highlights your features and makes them all the more striking. Go for a platinum that has more blue undertones and less yellow undertones. Yellow undertones will wash you out.

Ashy Blonde

This shade is another great blonde option for those who aren’t quite ready for platinum. It’s still vibrant and fun but doesn’t have any golden highlights. Again, this will ensure your sparkle isn’t dimmed.

Sandy Brown

Brunette hues can be hard because they tend to have orange undertones. Those don’t pair well with your cool undertone. But, that’s where sandy brown comes in. It’s a mix of brown and blonde with cool tones throughout. And, it looks good on every skin shade.

Chestnut

Another brunette shade we love is chestnut. You really can’t go wrong with the hue, given it flatters just about everyone and works for every season.

Red Velvet

Moving into red shades, we love a good red velvet on cooler skin tones. It adds a whole lot of depth and warmth to your chilly complexion without washing you out.

Burgundy

If you want an even deeper red, go for a nice burgundy. This wine-like shade is subtle, yet delivers quite the impact. And, yet again, it’s one of those shades that looks good on just about everyone.

Jet Black

Contrary to what you may assume, you can go extra dark with your cool skin tone. It’s all about sticking to cooler undertones in your hair as well. So if you go jet black, make sure you have blue undertones in there so you don’t get washed out.

Deep Purple

For an extra pop of color, try a deep purple. Once again, we want to remind you to stick with cooler undertones to make sure the purple doesn’t overpower you. Fortunately, the right hairstylist should know what to do.
