A Hair Extension Makeover with Priscilla Valles

When it comes to hair trends, I’m the last to fall in line. As proof, I’ve had the same collarbone length, platinum hair for 10+ years. At most, I would experiment with bangs, but never was I one to make a major change. And then, last summer, I decided to try out the in-the-moment bob. There was something about it that looked so fun and effortless. I loved it for the first few months, but then one morning, I woke up and all I wanted was my medium-length locks back—I missed my beloved top-knot dearly! I spent the next few months painstakingly trying to grow out the short cut, but having bleached my hair for a decade, my strands just weren’t strong enough. That’s when I knew I needed extensions, but with a busy schedule planning Mane University, I put it off and continued to trim my bob *cough* borderline mullet.

When I scheduled our first Mane University extension class with Priscilla Valles and Sarah Conner, I couldn’t wait to hear their extension advice so I could take the next steps and book an appointment somewhere. Then, a miracle happened, and Priscilla said, “Let’s do your extensions next!” Doing my best to contain my inner fangirl, I thanked her for her generosity and went on with my day. She was so sweet to offer, but it would never happen, I thought to myself. I mean, she’s the busiest, most sought after extensionist in the world, there’s no way she has time to tend to my tresses, right? Wrong! Just a few days later, I got a text from Priscilla asking when I was free to meet for a consultation! I couldn’t believe it was happening. I’ve unknowingly attempted to replicate so many of Priscilla’s custom hair looks [X-Tina’s platinum & black, X-Tina’s platinum and red… you catch my drift!]

Here’s how the hair transformation of my dreams went down:

First thing’s first, Priscilla and I held a quick consultation at her insanely chic and picture-perfect home [talk about major #apartmentgoals] to talk color-matching and decide what type of extensions would be best for me. I liked the idea of individuals, but Priscilla wasn’t sure my hair would be strong enough, so she suggested Hair Lingerie tape-ins, because they’re gentle, help with growth, and when done right, go almost all the way up to the part which would allow me to add a generous amount of length without a line of demarcation.

Priscilla works closely with Hair Lingerie and told me there’s no better option on the market. I was sold! She placed the order for my hair and it arrived the very next day— as if I didn’t already feel like a VIP [and I did], the 12-hour hair delivery definitely did the trick.

The color was close, but we wanted perfection so we enlisted my go-to girl Liz Jung, colorist at Meche Salon in Beverly Hills, to match my perfect root-y platinum. Overnight, Liz [former assistant to Tracey Cunningham] and Jacob Schwartz [current assistant to Tracey Cunningham] took on the huge task and nailed it in one shot! THE very next day, my dream hair was waiting for me. Who am I, Chrissy Teigen? At this point, I was feeling V-VIP!

A few days later I met Priscilla in the Mane Addicts studio for the big day! I watched Priscilla lay out the hair, apply the tape, and then paint on a special Hair Lingerie glue that makes them hold a little stronger. I wondered how it was physically possible to put that much hair on my head— it’s at least three times the amount of my natural hair.

We got started, Priscilla got in her groove, and all of a sudden she reached for her scissors. I thought to myself, “We’re done already?!” I was expecting hours of work ahead of us, but in reality I think only about 35 minutes had passed.

35 minutes and a full-blown transformation, that is. This is the type of hair appointment I can get used to!

extension after

I’ve been wearing the hair for a few weeks now and I can’t remember life without them. You might think more hair = more time getting ready, but these extensions changed my morning routine in the best possible way.

Here’s my new routine!

DAY 1: Styling time, 10 minutes

Step 1:

Use a leave-in conditioner on the ends to gently detangle — I love the Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Beachcomber Leave-in Conditioner — spray from mid-shaft through the ends and then blow-dry the roots. Detangle with your fingers to keep that beautiful natural wave in the hair!

*Pro tip: I can’t emphasize enough… tapes are weakest when wet so be very careful when combing and always hold the roots to prevent pulling the bond. Never brush wet extensions or you might just find a few pieces hanging from your brush!

Step 2:

Leave the ends to air dry.

DAY 2: Styling time, 15 minutes

Step 1:

Gently brush with a Sheila Stotts Removal Brush to detangle and then prep hair with Kevin Murphy Damage Manager to prevent heat styling damage.

*remember to keep the product away from the tape!

Step 2:

Grab 3-inch pieces of hair and bend with a flat iron. I make sure not to select individual wefts to prevent obvious separation of the extensions.

Step 3:

Rub a small amount of Ouai Hair Oil from mid-shaft through the ends.

*Pro tip: Be sure to keep oil based products away from the bonds. Oil will weakens the bond and is a sure fire way to slide those lux locks right out!

Step 4:

Run a pea-size amount of Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel Styling Cream through the ends for texture and separation.

This style generally lasts me 3-4 days with minor touchups!

DAY 3 through 4, 5, 6… *cough*: Styling time, 5 minutes

Step 1:

Touch up with Kardashian Beauty Dry Shampoo at the roots.

Step 2:

Run a flat iron through any crimped or flattened waves.

Step 3:

Lightly re-apply styling cream at ends.
