It goes without saying that 2017 took a toll on most of us, so what better way to ensure for a better new year ahead then by planning out your New Year’s resolutions. While your list will probably include things like getting fit, getting organized or spending more time with family and friends, one super attainable resolution that should be on everyone’s list is to get healthier hair. To help you achieve that healthy hair goal, we’ve come up with a list of hair resolutions that will give you your best mane in the new year.
We’ve drummed up 11 hair resolutions you should be making to guarantee that 2018 is the year of your healthiest, most luscious locks yet.
1. Sleep with a silk pillow case
Not only do silk pillowcases help to extend your blowout but they also aid in preventing frizz and breakage while you sleep. So, if you want to save your strands while you sleep and prevent breakage that comes from using cotton pillowcases, add ‘purchasing a silk pillowcase’ to your list of hair resolutions. We love Slip silk pillowcases as they come in the chicest colors and leave our locks extra soft, (you can get the lowdown on Slip and five other silk pillowcases here.)
2. Pay attention to your scalp
One of the most common hair faux-pas is neglecting the scalp, which is a major issue considering your scalp is the basis for your hair’s health. Incorporating a scalp scrub into your weekly hair regimen will help to exfoliate and prevent dandruff and product buildup, as well as aid in hair growth. IGK’s Low Key uses crushed walnut and walnut oil to exfoliate and nourish the scalp while apple cider vinegar clarifies and adds shine.
3. Do a weekly multi-tasking hair mask
Incorporating a hair mask at least once a week that targets various issues is key to maintaining your hair’s health. Christophe Robin’s Regenerating Mask with prickly pear seed oil is the hair gods’ gift to earth and perfect for all hair types. The mask detangles and smoothes the hair, eliminates frizz and protects and revives both color-treated and natural hair.
4. Invest in good hair tools
Whether you use hair tools daily or once a month, investing in quality tools that protect the hair while efficiently styling are key to both your hair’s health and lewk. T3’s Singlepass flat iron is a lightweight straightener that does just as the name suggests – straightens hair in a single pass, ultimately eliminating the amount of heat applied to the hair which in turn, eliminates heat damage. See our guide to the best hair tools available on the market right now, here.
5. Try alcohol-free products
More often than not products like shampoos and hair sprays contain various alcohols that are not only flammable but have major drying-effects on the hair. This new year, aim to try alcohol-free products like Kenra’s Alcohol-Free Shaping Spray when styling your hair to lock-in hold while eliminating dry, brittle strands.
6. Find a good leave-in conditioner
Finding a leave-in conditioner that detangles, hydrates and protects your locks all before styling is key to maintaining your healthiest mane. Sachajuan’s Leave In Conditioner is a lightweight leave in that hydrates your scalp and leaves hair shiny, moisturized and full of body. Find the best leave-in conditioner for your hair type here.
7. Use thermal protectants
For most people, using hot tools is inevitable. And while we’re all aware of the damaging effects that heat can have on our hair, products like GHD’s Heat Protect Spray can majorly aid in preventing heat-induced damage by protecting your mane when you have no other option than to use a curling iron or flat iron. To use, simply spritz the protectant spray onto damp or dry hair prior to applying heat.
8. Start from the inside
As you probably already know, your hair’s health starts from the inside, providing your body with proper vitamins and nutrients is key in maintaining a healthy mane. The Mane Choice’s Manetabolism Plus vitamin is a daily supplement that contains Vitamins A, B, C and E as well as biotin to aid in nourishing the hair, skin and nails and promoting faster, healthier growth.
9. Use a microfiber towel
If you’re not already hip to the long list of benefits that come from using a microfiber towel, you need to be for the sake of your hair. No matter your hair type, microfiber towels are key to preventing breakage, drying hair faster and maintaining your hair’s moisture (among other things you can read about here) so investing in a microfiber towel like DevaCurl’s DevaTowel is one of the most important hair resolutions you can make.
10. Use the right shampoo
This should go without saying, but using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair is way more important than you think. Having trouble maintaining your hair color? Curls not as bouncy as you’d like? What about that scalp, is it getting oily way faster than you’d like? Pay attention to the shampoo and conditioner you’re using! We love Function of Beauty’s customizable shampoo and conditioner that you can literally customize to fit your hair type, target your hair woes and get delivered monthly right to your door.
11. Clean your brushes and tools
Just like your makeup brushes, your hair brushes and hot tools also need a little TLC every once in a while to get rid of product build-up and ensure your shiniest mane yet. Check out celeb stylist Harry Josh’s tips for cleaning your tools and brushes (and why it’s SO important) here.
