It’s amazing at taking baby hairs and keeping everything in place. It’s also not harsh on your hair and has moisturizing properties, which is great for summer.
Using a toothbrush, dab a little product of the baby hairs you want to tame then sculpt with the toothbrush into the direction you want them to lay in. I also love using it to sleek hair into snatched pony’s and buns because it holds the hair so well and keeps the hair super shiny.
Got2be Glued Styling Hair Glue: $5 and Creme of Nature Perfect Edges: $5
My personal favorite is Perfect Edges by Creme of Nature because it keeps edges soft and not crunchy stiff like gel. However, in the summer, heat can emulsify the softer edge control products, so typically I prefer to use a combo of gel and a softer, more pomade-like edge control if I know the heat will weaken the hold of the product. For extreme temperatures, I use a cocktail of Perfect edges and Got2Be Glued Gel.
The cocktail allows the hair to maintain some level of softness while the gel provides hold and prevents the hair from curling back up, or falling out of place due to emulsification. On tougher textures, I will use just the gel.
Tip! First!!!!! If the hair will be laying on the scalp (a technique I try to avoid on very hot days), you’ll want to swab the area with alcohol first. Things like residue and makeup will prevent the products from working correctly. Apply your edge control and then a small amount of the gel on top. This extra step will give you MUCH longer lasting control over your edges. I prefer to finish with a diffused blowdryer to lock it in and ensure I used the right amount of product.
I’ve tried a lot of edge control products but none has performed better than Braid Barbie Drip Edge Control (great for 2a -4b hair) and Styling Gel (best for 4c hair). Braid Barbie is an entrepreneur out of North Carolina and a a master of braids, so she has formulated her products to best serve her clients; especially in the south’s heat and humidity.
These products were created by a hairstylist who wasn’t happy with the performance of products on the market. Braid Barbie specializes in textured hair, she has hand-created a product that lasts through humidity and heat without flaking so her clients have long lasting styles.
Braid Barbie also sells a double sided edge tamer that has a small boar bristle brush head on one side and a tiny comb on the other for flawless application and styling. A pro tip is to set the edges by wrapping a silk scarf along the hairline to apply pressure while the product dries for extra insurance.
Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Edge Control Smoother: $8
It's amazing for every hair texture from fine and frizzy to coarse and untamable. It’s applied to dry hair to ensure added moisture which is great for the summer heat. It also dries with shine instead of leaving it crunchy with a gel but has better hold than a pomade.
My favorite way to use is to style the hair to the desired look then lay those baby hairs down with a good amount of product on the hair, using either a wooden small toothbrush or my new favorite BabyTress Edge Styler with two sides which allows it to work for every hair type.
I just got the BabyTress Edge Styler and I love it! It has a unique triangular shape that makes it easy to get in the creases of the face and hairline. It is dual sided which makes it amazing for all different hair textures and for laying the hair flat. I love using with Bumble and bumble Sumotech or Oribe Rock Hard Gel.
