There is no shortage of hair oils in the world. You’ve got the classics, like coconut and argan. Then there are the unexpected, such as rosemary and carrot. One we’ve been seeing pop up more and more in the list of hair product ingredients is hemp oil. Though not exactly unique (CBD hair care is everywhere these days), the interest in this oil has increased tenfold over the past few years. We’ve been recommended products that contain the oil by a number of hair care experts—so many that we’ve lost count at this point. And the internet is ablaze with claims that hemp oil can boost hair growth. So we leaned into our curiosity and reached out to the experts to discover everything there is to know about using hemp oil for hair. Get the low down below!

About the Experts
Emma Dellborg is the brand manager for LeaLuo, a new beauty brand with multi-beneficial hair products.
What Exactly Is Hemp Oil?
You may be curious about what hemp oil even is. And if you’re not, you’ll enjoy this science lesson anyway. Osmia founder Sarah Villafranco, MD notes that “hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. It is cold-pressed, much like olive or sesame oil, and contains less than 0.3% THC, which differentiates it from the plants of the same species used to make psychoactive cannabis products.”
LeaLuo brand manager Emma Dellborg points out that “hemp oil and CBD are not the same things. CBD is extracted from the leaves of the same plant and is what can induce hallucinogenic effects. Hemp oil does not have that.”
Hemp Oil Hair Benefits
It’s incredibly moisturizing.
One of the main draws of using hemp oil on your hair is how moisturizing it is. Villafranco notes this is due to “essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) in hemp oil.” Consider your parched strands quenched.
It adds plenty of shine.
Apart from being moisturizing, hemp oil can add an extra boost of shine to otherwise dull hair. All it takes is a few drops to get your strands to glow.
It can help alleviate scalp issues.
Struggle with dandruff or an oily scalp? Hemp oil to the rescue. “Hemp oil applied directly to the scalp can help with dermatitis and regulating sebum production, thanks to anti-inflammatory compounds naturally found in hemp oil, like alpha and gamma-linoleic acids,” shares Villafranco.
It may help with hair growth.
The verdict is still out on whether or not hemp oil can actually help with hair growth. But, one thing’s for certain—the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in hemp oil help support hair density and thickness.
It works for all hair types.
Both our experts agree hemp oil can be used for every hair type there is. Whether you have dry, curly hair or oily, straight hair, there’s a way for you to incorporate hemp oil into your hair care routine to reap its benefits.
Things to Consider Before Using Hemp Oil
There aren’t too many things to consider before using hemp oil in your hair care routine, given it works for almost every hair type. The one thing to be aware of is any allergies you may have to hemp or cannabis. If you’re not sure, it’s best to check with a doctor before testing out the oil.
One other tiny detail to consider is that “cannabinoids could be detected in hair samples after topical use,” Villafranco points out. She does note, however, that “taking it orally should not make you fail a drug test.” Still, if you have a job with strict drug testing, you may want to use another oil just to be safe.
How to Use Hemp Oil for Hair
Villafranco recommends “massaging two to three drops of pure, organic, cold-pressed hemp oil (or more, depending on how thick or long your hair is) into wet hair” to incorporate hemp oil into your hair care routine. She’s also a fan of using it as an overnight mask by rubbing some into your scalp and rinsing it out in the morning.
Both of our experts are also fans of adding hemp oil-based products to your hair care routine. It’s one of the easiest ways to use the oil after all. Villafranco and Dellborg share their product picks below!
