Call us crazy, but we’re already searching for spring shade inspo. Warmer weather is on the way, and these longer days and sunnier skies have us dreaming of lighter locks. And it looks like we’re not the only ones in need of a little change.
Kylie Jenner made our jaws drop when she debuted a major mane makeover on Instagram last week. The makeup mogul traded her signature dark tresses for a glossy golden hue, and the result is out of this world. We chatted with Redken Celebrity Colorist and the master behind this 10+ million likes ‘do, Cassondra Kaeding to find out more about this breakout color trend.
Going From Dark Dark to Light
Kylie’s sun-kissed strands are the perfect pre-summer shade. But taking the reality star’s espresso tresses to a natural-looking honey brunette took some serious skill. “I had to lighten Kylie’s natural color to a light brown” Kaeding explains, “then I lifted the highlights to a light golden blonde, then toned to a cool gold.” An all-over lift is just the thing we need to cure these cold-weather blues. Something bright and bubbly, but cool and collected. Steering clear of brassier tones, Kaeding carefully crafts the subtle spring aesthetic we’ve been searching for.
Kaeding achieved this superb shade with the help of a few choice products. “I high lifted Kylie’s natural hair with Redken’s Blonde Idol high lift.” says Kaeding, “once it was lifted to the desired level I went back in and glossed the Redken shades EQ to cancel the unwanted warm tones.” The key to this color is its cool, crisp glow. Weeding out those warm tones makes for a truly terrific winter-to-spring style. “For the highlights I used flash lift then glossed the highlights with Redken shades to a cool gold.” Kaeding continues. With face-framing highlights and luminous light ends, Kylie’s honey brunette hue pops against her olive complexion. It’s safe to say we’ll be seeing this shade everywhere in the next couple of months.
