How Australia’s Best Brunettes Keep Their Hair Color Rich

The only thing shining brighter than the sun down under are the brunettes walking out of Natalie Anne Salon in Sydney, Australia. Their senior hairstylist Adam E has a way of polishing brown hues as we’ve never seen before. Seriously, whoever said blondes have more fun didn’t know the secret to maintaining a rich brunette color. We asked Adam how he makes Australia’s brunettes gleam and he smiled all his secrets. Scroll below for his tips and products to get the best version of your brown hair color!

Use the Right Products

The main contributors to colors fading are heat and dehydration from excessive sun exposure, heat styling at high temperature, and a stripping shampoo and conditioner. My favorites for maintaining a rich brunette shade are Balmain Moisturizing Shampoo. It’s a lightweight shampoo that leaves hair feeling soft and manageable. The best conditioner for amplifying shine in brown hair is NA C3 Enriched Hydrating Mask. Designed for more dehydrated, coarse hair types, this multi-use product substitutes a conditioner and can be used as an intense hydration treatment. Balmain Revitalizing Conditioner is another favorite of mine for maintaining rich brunette color. I feel as though most people are battling dehydrated, colored hair that’s constantly being heat styled so I prefer to use a strengthening and hydrating conditioner like this one.

Avoid Sulfates and Alcohol

I ask my clients to avoid using products with high sulfate contents, as they will affect the intensity of your clients color. Alcohol-based products should also be avoided, as they will dehydrate and strip out color and reduce shine.

Don’t Skip the Gloss

I like to give my clients a clear glossing treatment when they come in for a weekly blow dry. It does not insert any color pigment, but it gives brunettes that extra pop of shine.

Consider Your Skin Tone

Girls with cool skin tones looking for the most suitable rich brunette shade should go for a mocha brown. Warm skin tones should try a golden brunette and neutral skin tones try a caramel brown. Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of requests for honey, caramel, and ashy brunettes. Anything with multi- dimension is always beautiful, which entails creating the look by adding highlights and then toning them down for dimension.
