How to Properly Trim Your Beard (or Your Man’s) at Home

So you have a beard, but do you know how to properly maintain it? Most guys just randomly hack into their beard once it gets too long to handle, but maintaining a perfectly coiffed beard takes dedication and a steady hand. Below, celebrity groomer, Christine Nelli, shares her top six tips for giving yourself a proper at-home beard trim.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

1. Comb

2. Trimmers or clippers

3. Guards

4. Scissors

5. Beard oil

How to Trim Your Beard, Step-by-Step

Step 1: Detangle

Comb all the knots out and comb the beard downwards so all the hairs are going in the same direction.

Step 2: Select the Right Guard and Clip

Get the clippers or trimmers with all your guards and lay them out in front of you. If you want to maintain the length, try a higher guard like a number five or up all over. If you aren’t sure, just start with a bigger clip and work your way down until you get the length you desire.

Step 3: Fade

Fade the neck and cheeks using at least two guard sizes down as you move outward.

Step 4: Trim the Mustache

Trim the mustache using scissors or small trimmers with no guard, combing all the hairs to the side first and using your comb as a guard, and cutting unnecessary hair. Then, comb down over the lip to trim anything that hangs over the lip.

Step 5: Clean Details

Use scissors for detailing. Clean up strays and give yourself a more natural finish.

Step 6: Beard Oil

Finish with a nice beard oil. If you don’t have any, I always like to use organic coconut oil.

And while we’re at it, HERE’s how to find the best haircut and beard for your face shape!
