In a decade of pin straight strands, Carrie Bradshaw was an icon for c-c-c-curly girls. Her wild, larger-than-life locks inspired a generation of women to let their natural tresses shine. We’re paying homage to this iconic character’s magnificent mane with a little how-to. Read on to find out how you can copy SJPs Sex and the City curls at home.
What You’ll Need
This look is heavy on the prep-work. You’ll need a curling iron (1″ or smaller), blowdryer, round brush, hairbrush, volumizing product, texturizing spray, hairspray, silk hair scarf (if you’ve got one) and a lot of bobby pins.
The Night Before
This look is a two day process. The real work takes place the night before you want to rock some Carrie curls. Start with freshly-washed, towel-dried hair. Pick your favorite volumizing product and run it through your roots. The amount you use will vary with your hair thickness and texture.
Next, blow-dry your hair straight with a round brush. Carrie’s signature look is big and bold, so you’ll want to flip your tresses upside down for a few minutes as you dry them to really fluff up the roots. Once your hair is completely dry, apply a light dusting of hairspray throughout. Avoid over-applying. You want your mane to hold a curl, but you don’t want those strands too crispy to comb through in the morning.
Post-spray, part your hair down the center. Use a curling iron to curl a 1-inch section of hair. Immediately after the section is curled, twist it into a tiny, tight, mini-bun and pin it to your head. Continue this process with 1-inch sections of hair until your entire mane is wrapped into even-sized mini-buns. Ensure each bun is super secure before wrapping your head in a silk scarf for extra overnight protection. Then simply drift off to sleep dreaming of the perfect Sex and the City strands.
The Day Of
The next day, pull the pins out of each bun and unwrap your curls. If your curls seem too tight you’ve nailed it! You should be left ultra-tight, poodle-esque ringlets. Now it’s time for the fun part. Grab your hair brush and brush out these spirals for a full-on, fluffy af, 2000s aesthetic that SJP herself would be proud of. Just add a spritz of texturizing spray to top it all off and voila! You’re ready to take the big apple by storm!
