With so many products out there on the market, it can be a challenge to know what the right ones are for your specific natural texture. Personally, I’ve always been challenged by my dry, frizzy curls that seem to be thicker on one side of my head than the other, ugh.
That’s why my curiosity was piqued by vegan hair care brand Maui Moisture, a line that emphasizes wholesome beauty for all hair types, but has products specifically aimed at curls of different types. They make strong use of Aloe Vera to create top-notch, hydrating infusions that strengthen across the entire curl spectrum. What excited me most about this brand is that their products also contain no sulfates, parabens, gluten, silicones or synthetic dyes and are all under $10. Yep, you read that correctly, $10, my friend.
With a mission statement like that, I knew I had to try. Maui Moisture was kind enough to provide me with a few samples to test and I’m thrilled to report I found a fabulous routine to properly care for my 3C curls. If you’re looking for the right tools to give your coils high quality care without spending a fortune, read on below for what I found worked best.
Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate For Dry, Damaged Hair Shampoo & Conditioner
Prior to receiving the brand’s Heal & Hydrate Shampoo ($8.99) and Conditioner ($8.99) , I’d actually already been using their Curl Quench set for thick, curly hair. Although I liked this combination, I have to say the Heal & Hydrate worked best for me. One thing I love about the Maui Moisture line is that aloe vera is the first ingredient, instead of deionized water which can dry out curls, so the formulas start off with a super hydrating base.
The addition of shea butter soothed the brittle top layer of my mane perfectly and kept it feeling soft long after it dried. This was revolutionary for me considering that has always been my issue with past products. After my hair would settle in, it would return to its original state of barrenness in a big way. If you also share this struggle, this set is your go-to. It heals strands on a deep level and provides long lasting moisture.
Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate Hair Mask For Dry, Damaged Hair
3C curls (tight and about the size of a pencil) tend to be the most prone to dehydration so anything like leave-in conditioners and curl creams are absolutely essential. A few times a week, I swap out the regular conditioner in the Heal & Hydrate set for the Deep Conditioning Hair Mask ($8.99). This just provides a little something more for hair types that could use the texture boost.
Maui Moisture Curl Quench Curl Smoothie For Thick, Curly Hair
Another of their products I had a ton of success with is their Curl Quench Curl Smoothie for Thick, Curly Hair ($8.99). Loaded with creamy Papaya Extract, Plumeria Extract and coconut oil, it’s truly a nutrients-packed smoothie for your locks. After making this a part of my regular wash and go routine, I noticed it helped smooth down a lot of the volume my curls tend to have once they fully dry. If you also don’t love an overly puffy look, this is perfect to apply when your hair is damp after shampooing and conditioning.
Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture Weightless Oil Mist
This Maui Moisture Oil Mist ($8.99) is perfect for the winter months as it gives a mega hydration boost. It contains coconut milk, Guava Extract and mango butter in a no-mess mist you can use on the go. I use this on days my strands just can’t seem to get it together and it delivers the results. I will say however, a little goes a long way with this product so use it sparingly. There were a few times I overdid it and ended up with oily AF locks.
