For years I’ve stressed about every organic vegetable that has gone into my salads. I happily hand Whole Foods my paycheck when I shop non-GMO and I read the back of every ingredients label on my food religiously. I was waxing poetic about all of these efforts over brunch with a friend when she asked if I took the same care with my beauty routine. The realization hit me like a concrete truck, although I’m crazy about what I put in to my body, what I slather on can have just as many reprecussions.
I rushed home and pored over every single product in my hair routine. I flipped packages like a madwomen only to discover that I couldn’t recognize or read half of the ingredients. After the sad realization that I had a chemical-laden routine settled in, I decided to do something about it. I would adopt a clean hair routine.

I eased into it with my shampoo. I swapped out my old bottle for SEED Phytonutrients’ Daily Hair Cleanser Shampoo. Not only did the product’s smell transport me into the best spa daydream, the shower friendly paper bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper. This natural and sustainable product by Shane Wolf was designed for all hair types. The lather was very light compared to what I was used to but I figured a clean ingredient list was worth giving up some lather. The key ingredients in the formula are camelina seed oil, sunflower seed oil, coconut and turmeric which left my hair feeling more bouncy and refreshed than usual.

After my shower I untangled my hair with a coconut oil infused comb by Cricket Co. The tool is a favorite of celeb stylist Castillo, the mane Artist responsible for the tresses on Hollywood heavy hitters like Ruby Rose, Halle Berry and Priyanka Chopra. At only $5 a pop, I figured I should also splurge on a tool that would be consistent with my new clean routine. The comb glided smoothly through my hair and felt like it even helped reduce a bit of my natural frizz.
After my tangles were taken care of, the biggest challenge came next. I worried about styling my hair with clean products, thinking that these minimal-ingredient formulas wouldn’t be as effective. I was sorely mistaken and I’m glad I ventured to try a few different products. First up was Rahua’s Cream Wax. This non-greasy product offered pliable hold and low-wattage shine. The wax is scented with Palo Santo oil and immediately became one of my favorite things to apply during my clean hair routine the mornings.
My go-to look when I am in a hurry is a high, messy bun with big earrings. Historically, I would use a chemical heavy gel to keep flyaways in place. I swaped my traditional product for a non-aerosol plant based hair spray, also by Rahua. I was afraid of its lasting power but was pleasantly surprised when I even woke up the next day in the same hair. This magical formula packs a punch and is best for hairstyles that need to be kept in place for hours.
Skipping a shampoo or a spin class would typically send me crawling back my aerosol dry shampoo. I opted to skip my dry shampoo and instead packed my handbag with Rahua’s Voluminous Spray in a travel size. A few sprays after activity or in-between shampoos would revitalize my hair and scalp quickly. This USDA certified organic hair refresher is plant-based and alcohol-free. Citrus juice extracts are used to get rid of oils and lavendar and eucalyptus provide a rereshing scent. Although not as potent as the industrial grade dry shampoos I’m accustomed to, this product did exactly what it set out to do. Provide a noticable pick-me-up when a shower isn’t in sight.
One week into my new routine and my usually naturally-limp hair had a bouncy volume I’d never seen before. I was also constantly complimented on how great I smelled, even without applying perfume. The natural oils and ingredients in all of the new products I was using changed the way I literally smelled. When it came time to shower, my scalp felt less and less grimy as time wore on. The buildup was also less noticable as my clean routine took on. Unlike my diet du jour, this change is definitely something I’m going to stick to!
