The cornerstone of Alodia Haircare is the user feedback and the brand’s site features rave reviews from real customers who all tell a similar story of game-changing results after trying the products. The brand is also unlike most for many reasons for WOC, but especially because it includes the option to customize your entire hair care routine. We were intrigued, so we reached out to the brand’s founder, Dr. Isfahan on all things Alodia Haircare, from her inspiration and medical background, to her personal thoughts on hair products for women of color.
Mane Addicts: What prompted you to start Alodia?
Dr. Isfahan: I struggled with damaged hair and itchy scalp from years of using chemical straighteners aka relaxers. Around this time, I was also enrolled at Vanderbilt School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow and was working on a clinical trial that looked at the autoimmune disease Sarcoidosis.
Like many autoimmune diseases, it affects black women at a disproportionately higher rate. I realized that there may be a connection between the products that we as black women use on our bodies, like relaxers, and wanted to get away from the toxic ingredients in many of the products that I was using. So I decided to utilize my expertise in science and medicine to create products that could not only help with the breakage and irritation that I was experiencing but were also made with clean ingredients.

MA: Can you tell me more about your background?
Dr. Isfahan: I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY but now I live in Maryland. I’m also trained as a PhD Bio-Medical Scientist, using my expertise to research human diseases. However, my favorite “laboratory” is the kitchen, where I can spend countless hours creating products or making body cream for my beautiful 7-year-old twin boys and 9 month old son.
My dream has always been to marry my expertise in science with my passion for creating clean beauty products. In 2014, after years of struggling with damaged hair from chemical straightener use, I decided to make my dream a reality by founding Alodia. After 3 years of countless hours of formulating products, I launched Alodia in 2017.
MA: How does the customization aspect of the brand work?
Dr. Isfahan: Within the textured hair space, personalization is severely lacking. Our market research has shown that women with textured hair are overwhelmed and confused when picking products. They usually will buy products based on a suggestion from a friend, pretty packaging, or the way the products smell. They spend about $1k/yr. on products, however only 10-15% of these products actually work for their hair type. These customers are tired of wasting money on hair products and are desiring a seamless, user friendly selection process, personalized for their hair type.
We are solving this problem head on. We understand that every person’s scalp and hair are different, so we offer a quiz that allows a customer to create a customized kit that is based on their scalp health, hair goals and styling preferences.
For customers that need additional personalization, we also offer virtual consultations from me, a Ph.D. scientist and certified trichologist (one who studies the hair and scalp) or one of our other trichologists.
MA: What does a consultation entail?
Dr. Isfahan: For the consultation, the client will fill out a form that tells us more about their hair care practices and the problems they have experienced with their hair and scalp. During the consult we talk about their problems as well as their diet and make recommendations on the changes they can make to have a healthy hair and scalp. They leave the consultation with a healthy hair and scalp routine, complete with the Alodia products they can use to achieve great results
MA: Can you explain how the results are backed by science?
Dr. Isfahan: Within each and every product we use ingredients from plants, herbs and extracts that have been actually shown scientifically to nourish the scalp follicle and moisturize and strengthen the hair strands providing the perfect environment for healthy hair to thrive.
MA: How do you formulate without harsh ingredients?
Dr. Isfahan: All of our products are free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, silicones, artificial colors or fragrances, mineral oil, petroleum

Dr. Isfahan: That I am a proud mompreneur, of 7-year-old twin boys and a 9-month-old son. My husband, Dr. Rashad DuPree Harris, MD is also involved in the business, using his medical expertise as a physician to help with the efficacy of the products.
