Jen Atkin on Giving Back and Navigating This Challenging Time

One of the most rewarding things one can do is give back; give back to our communities, those in need, our families, and friends. Now more than ever we’ve been tasked to help others in a way we all probably least expected–by social distancing. With US and global COVID-19 cases reaching unprecedented numbers, our healthcare system is being pushed into overdrive trying to keep up and contain this virus so we can protect the people we love the most. In addition to washing your hands and staying home (please!), charities like the American Red Cross and Baby2Baby are working around the clock to provide for those in need, especially during this trying time where the only thing certain is change.

As hairdressers, I know this is a challenging time. Most of us in major cities have been ordered to #StayatHome (which you absolutely should) in order to control the spread of COVID-19. This means salons, photoshoots and press events have all be cancelled, leaving many of us out of work for the foreseeable future. While this is scary, I challenge you to find new ways to do business. Whether that’s doing Zoom consultations with clients, becoming more active on social media–you know I’m trying to learn the ropes of TikTok, or brainstorming a new venture. I also encourage you to use this time to slow down. We are on our feet 24/7, so try and see this time as the spring break you definitely needed.

A few weeks back–prior to us knowing the severity of the virus at hand–myself and the Mane Addicts squad gathered for our annual Giveback Day where we partner with Baby2Baby to provide a day of fun, haircuts and styling to families in need. This is always such a special day for us and a top priority for me because helping others teaches us compassion for others and also for ourselves.

Partnering with Baby2Baby & H.E.L.P. Everyone on our 3rd Annual Giveback Day was so special – it’s truly my favorite day of the year! Toni & Guy opened their doors to us and we had 50 stylists and assistants donate their Saturday to make a difference one family at a time to the 150+ women & children who received hair cuts & styling, with some being their first haircut ever! We even had a bowl cut or two, which was the cutest thing any of us have ever seen. When they were done, the families were able to go outside into our “Oh the Places You’ll Go” Kids Wonderland and eat a delicious meal, jump in the ball pit, decorate their new lunch box or create fun projects with sand art. So many fun activities!

We had so many amazing brands involved in our Giveback Day and we couldn’t have done it without them. The Mane Addicts team really pulled a great event together and I’m so grateful for the hard work of everyone involved. I’m so full of gratitude for all the stylists, brands & good hearted humans who made this day possible and always one to remember. Nothing beats coming together to bring a smile to the Baby2Baby kids + their hardworking mom’s faces. Thank you to Chrissy Teigen for coming thru with her Kids Wonderland booth. I also want to send love to these incredible stylists:

If you ever want to get involved in your city, the HELP EVERYONE (H.E.L.P) app is an incredible resource to be able to volunteer in your area. They help match you with opportunities and events for the greater good and meet like-minded people along the way. There are so many other ways to get involved in your city. For example you can volunteer at a soup kitchen, your local hospital, visit a senior center, organize a yard sale for charity, arrange a beach cleanup and be a good neighbor to name a few.
Being able to give back to Los Angeles has been a joy and we can’t wait to do it again and again.

Also major shout out to all of the incredible brands who donated to our parents & kids goodie bags. Moms took home Olly Vitamins, Versed Skincare, Quay glasses, Toni & Guy product and Conair brushes tucked into an Hershel bag. The kids, in addition to their massive play area, also received Olly kids gummies, Adidas sneakers, Mattel toys, The Happy Planner school supplies and MGA toys all wrapped in a super cool Hershel backpack. They were thrilled, to say the least!

Be on the lookout, we would love for you to join us!
