Joey Maalouf On How He Got His Start and His Big Break With Rachel Zoe

You may know Joey Maalouf as the hilariously chic cast member from the Bravo show, The Rachel Zoe Project. However, the Joey we know extends far past reality TV. Joey is an insanely talented hair AND makeup artist. Having started his career at a young age in NYC, Joey began his career working backstage at runway shows. Quickly after, he met Rachel Zoe, moved to the west coast, and has been a sought after hair and makeup artist since. Joey has styled the likes of Molly Sims, Diane Von Furstenburg, Jamie Lynn Sigler, and Jessica Alba (to name a few). We were lucky enough to chat with Joey about his career and inspiration.

How did you get your start in the industry?

I started doing makeup when I was 15 and hair when I was 17. I had an after school job at a salon and did anyone’s hair & makeup I could get my hands on. It was FUN so I went with it and it lead to me to New York in my 20’s where I learned so much so fast.

What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?

In the beginning of my career I thought the harder I worked and the more I achieved the sooner everything would become easier. I now realize there are always going to be challenges. I’ve learned to allow whatever it is I’m dealing with to teach me what I am not seeing.

Who are some role models who have inspired you?

Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman have been amazing role models… I’ve always been sort of a nomad and they helped guide me to have consistency.

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago or what was the best piece of advice you received?

BEST advice was from my childhood friend Andi Rehm’s refrigerator she a had a magnet that said “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always go where you’ve always gone.

How would you describe your beauty and hair philosophy?

I like to beautify women into the best version of themselves, I like ultimate glamour with an effortless outcome.
