The man behind Hayley Williams of Paramore’s jaw dropping bold hues and edgy strands, Brian O’Connor is Nashville’s go-to for music industry favorites. With a reputation of creating innovative, electric colors, it’s no surprise that Brian and Hayley teamed up to create goodDYEyoung, a range of eco-friendly, vegan hair dyes that come in the most coveted and vibrant shades. So how does one of Nashville’s most sought after artists and new business owner juggle it all? We had a chat with the Mane Master…
How did you get your start in the industry?
I have known since I was 12 that I wanted to become a hairstylist. My best friend’s mother growing up was a hairstylist and I absolutely loved going into her salon to help out and asked a million questions.
What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?
I think my biggest challenge has always been believing in myself, and realizing I was good enough. I think it’s still a challenge every day to remind myself to not compare my work and art to another’s. We are all equally talented and creative individuals, trying to do our best.
Who are some role models who have inspired you?
Hmm… For me this is a tough question because I am so inspired by a lot honestly. I see people on the street everyday whose style and flare inspire me in a lot of ways. Many of my coworkers at Fresh Salon in Nashville where I work inspire me with their creativity. I look to Instagram for a lot of inspiration as well.
Do you have a signature look or style that you are known for?
I’d say I’m definitely known for working with Hayley Williams of the band Paramore. I’ve been working with her for about 10 years now and I’ve been coloring, cutting, and styling her hair since their second album Riot! For the last four years, I’ve been doing her makeup and touring with the band.
What was your last major makeover that you’ve done?
The last major makeover I did was for the goodDYEyoung photo shoot I did in LA. My friend/coworker Katie and I colored eight models’ hair for the shoot. It was a colorful, fun time and you can see all the models we did at www.gooddyeyoung.com.
Which hair products or tools are always in your kit?
I use goodDYEyoung for all my creative color I do in the salon. Also, I keep Kevin Murphy, Davines, R&Co in my kit along with GHD heating tools and YS Park combs and brushes.
What is your favorite Instagram account to follow?
@hairbrained_official is one of my favs to keep up with lately!!!
What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
To not get distracted by what you see other people in your profession are doing. Don’t follow the trend, make the trend because you’re right where you should be.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? What advice would you give to new stylists?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is to always educate myself, and not to rely solely on Cosmetology School to teach me. Go out, seek, and find. My advice to a new stylist would be similar to the advice I was given, honestly – to never think you know it all about your career. I’ve always told myself the day I know everything about my career is the day I need to find something new to do.
What is the next chapter for you?
Well, with the launch of goodDYEyoung this month, I honestly think that will be the next chapter, I’m so excited and happy! It’s been a work in progress for the last 4 years, and now the world will get to be able to be creative and play with it and I’m so excited for them.
