MANE MASTER: Christian Marc

Christian Marc celebrity hairstylist

A Parisian transplanted in NYC, Christian Marc’s approach to hair has the soft touch of the French and the sharpness of the big apple. With a career that spans from celebrity and editorial to a brief stint on America’s Next Top Model in its prime, Christian has a flair that makes his work look expensive, chic, and sophisticated. Think Selma Blair and Priyanka Chopra (yes, he does their hair too!). So what makes the man behind the mane? Look no further…

How did you get your start in the industry?

I got my start when I was 13 years old. I was cutting my friend’s hair, and in that moment I decided, this is what I really want to do with my life.

What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?

I was living and working in Paris, still new to the industry, but I decided after I did a couple fashion shows in NY that I should move there. I knew it was too early in my career for me to move to New York, but I tried anyway. Two months later I was totally broke and no agency wanted me – obviously. The thing that made me overcome that challenge was the fact that the city brought me so much inspiration, opened my mind more artistically and made me want me to push myself to be stronger and better.

Who are some role models who have inspired you?

My role models are Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Veroushka, and Twiggy – to name few!

Do you have a signature look or style that you’re known for?

I would say my signature is an undone updo, with the French touch 😉

What was the last major makeover that you did?

The last makeover I did was for Maika Monroe who is in the new Independence Day movie. She asked me to chop her hair off and make her hair totally bleached platinum for a new science fiction role.

What hair products or tools are always in your kit?

L’Oreal Elnett hairspray is a must. I love Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, Ouai Soft Hairspray and Leonor Greyl styling cream. I am also attached to my YS Parks tail comb, the teaser, and my Mason Pearson brush. I alternate between three different sized curling irons as well.

What is your favorite Instagram account to follow?

My favorite Instagram account would have to be Nick Knight’s. He’s an amazing photographer – super creative and so inspirational.

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?

Always be humble and grateful, and always treat people nicely and with fairness.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? What advice would you give to new stylists?

The best advice someone gave me is to always have an open mind to any advice, regardless of what you know already!

The advice I would give is to be patient, persistent, organized, and clean in your work.

What is the next chapter for you?

The next chapter for me includes opening a concept lifestyle store and creating a small styling product line…to be continued!
