So how does one become the man that pioneered rainbow hues to a high end mainstream market? Danny Moon talks shop below.
How did your career first get started?
I needed a change of scenery. I was finishing my career in the Marine Corps and decided I would rather take orders from a woman.
What were some of the biggest challenges in your career?
Branding and re-branding. Standing for a creative color process and making it wearable for a high end demographic.
Who are some role models who inspire you?
Artists I have met on my journey, photographers, painters, creative directors, builders of ideas, and hairstylists I hold close to my heart. Christopher Pierce is a genius colorist with unlimited information and soul that is sincere with every piece of advice. Andy Lecompte is a beast of a hairstylist that after 2am jobs comes back to the hotel and reorganizes his extension collection for the next day. Christiaan, the legendary hair sculptor that invited me to New York to stay with him for my first Sephora job after our first job together with Innez and Vinoodh. All are open minded unstoppable creatures.
Do you have a signature technique that you are known for?
I’m known for my multi-chromatic color technique also known as ‘rainbow color’. I love the rainbow #hashtag, but personally prefer to associate all this color jazz with art. Art is forever. Tricks are for kids.
What was the last major makeover that you’ve done?
I’d have to say on myself. I went blonde from yellow and stopped wearing color for a second going a natural peach/blonde. My focus is on natural hair while I save the ‘rainbow color’ for my ‘rabbit out of the hat trick’. People work like that. Branding works like that.
What products and tools are always in your kit?
What’s your favorite Instagram account to follow?
Favorite Instagram: Lauren Alice Avery: pure and stormy. It takes my mind off hair for a split second. Decals and dames refresh my main frame.
What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago?
Instinct. Trust it. Doubt will try to own you, know it but don’t know it.
What was the best piece of advice you received?
Slow and steady wins the race. New stylists: live it, snort it and drink it. Make doing hair like breathing and you forget it’s even a job. It’s a motion your body was meant to do.
